Ok, so the wife brings me back to reality with the question: What do we do with the dog, when on the water for a few days?
Poodles don't take up much space on a 23, but I'm at a loss for the cure of latrine usage.
train the dog to use the head?
train to use a catbox?
try to go ashore a few times during the cruise?

What is the general words of wisdom?

Any input is greatly appreciated, the wife didn't like my first option.

CaptK had some great input on the sailfar.net forum recently.  Quite funny.  Learned a lot about what pet owners all over do or are willing to do to let their pets do the "do" :)

(adapted from wired.com rss feed) Sailors don't have the luxury of doggie doors and spacious yards, so their canine companions usually have no way to relieve themselves. Simone Iglicki was a dog owner in this predicament so she created the Pet Loo, a simutaled natural environment that allows your dog to take care of business while you're underway. This "backyard in a box" features synthetic grass, treated to eliminate odors, and an angled drainage system that collects urine in a tray beneath the turf, to be emptied by the owner. The whole unit  is washable in warm water. The Pet Loo is already a hit in Iglicki's native Australia, and she's looking for international distributors. For more information, visit her Web site.

I've had several dogs aboard.   We just make sure to go ashore at least once before turning in.  This is more an issue for blue water sailors who go on extended cruises.  Also, my son's Jack Russell is a bit energetic.  He can swim, but why take chances. Hence the life jacket and makeshift lifeline!
