Yesterday, 07-14-14, I hauled the boat out onto the trailer.  I was hauling out at about low tide but I still managed to get her on the trailer.  I pretty much had the truck down in the water to the bumper.  The entire trailer was submerged but I had enough of it in to pick the boat up.

I noticed that I don't have that piece on the trailer near the bow that guides the bow up to the wench.  That caused a bit of an issue because when I wenched the boat onto the trailer it really put pressure on the bobstay.  So much so that one of the pieces of the steel cable broke.  I now have to replace my bobstay.

I have already sent an email to Compac to see if I can order a bobstay.

Does anyone know where I can get the piece for the trailer that has a front roller?  I have a performance trailer that was factory standard.

I'm sure any shop that works on trailers or any weld shop that has access to a hot dip galv facility can make you that roller post.  It seems to me its only function is to limit rocking while traveling.  I actually lower mine when I'm winching up on the trailer and then raise it back just to make contact before I hit the road.

Since you are planning to replace you Bobstay anyway, you might ask Hutchins about the current version which is a solid rod or more accurately a tube I think.  It is designed to connect to the bow a little higher than the old bobstay and allow a place for the chock to hit the bow without interfering with the wire rope or winch strap eye.  Alternatively you can do a search and see what Skip did to lower his chock below the winch eye.

You have to love a company like Compac.  I have placed an order for a new bobstay.

Brackish....good call.  I will be replacing with the newer bobstay.  Funny, it is cheaper than the old one.  It is also a better solution with sitting on the trailer.

Interesting thing is that Compac said that you really don't need that front roller at all.  I guess that I won't mess with it.

When I loaded the boat on the trailer the bow of the boat was so low that the bobstay was striking the place where the bow is supposed to rest.  This is what caused my issue with the bobstay.  The new bobstay will take care of this issue, pretty much.

When you load your boat on the trailer what do you do about the bow coming in at such a negative angle?  The bow rest was trying to move when I wenched the boat up from friction.

I have placed the new bobstay on the boat.  It looks good.  It wasn't a bad job at all.

That being said you know that something else had to slow progress.  I ended up having to replace my trailer jack because it broke during this job. 

When you put the boat on the trailer is the bow eye below or above the front brace on the trailer?

I have been busy the last two days.

I have finished my rewiring project.  Most of the wire in the boat is new.  There are some new bus bars and a new fuse panel now.  I also moved the battery switch and wired in two new 12V outlets.  I have a very large negative bus bar where all negative wires lead.  I have a new bus bar under the V berth in the starboard storage area that has positive leads for Cabin electronics and a negative bus bar where all the forward negative leads go.

My house bank is 215 Amp hours out of two 6V batteries, wired in a series.  The batteries sit in the starboard cockpit locker near the rear bulkhead.  I simply built a new plywood platform on top of the old battery platform.  I bought new battery boxes for the golf cart battery.  This build did work out pretty good but I wish I had given a little more room for the batteries on the new platform.  It is VERY tight with the lids on the battery box.  I can probably move some things around to make this better.

I mounted in a new flexible water tank in the bow under the V berth towards the front.  I ran a brand new hose also (eventually I will wire in a water pump and it will be close to that location).

I made a little box out of some spare plywood and mounted in the port lazzerette against the bulkhead.  It is the right size to put my spare 2 cycle outboard oil.  I am thinking about mounting something to the side of the hull in this lazzerette to hold dock lines.  I definitely need to make some smart storage solutions to organize things.

On serenity in the starboard locker they're was a 1x2 ish board mounted along  the forward top edge of the locker. That had 4 or 5 dowels sticking out of that to hang dock  lines on. Very simple but worked well. The lines basically draped over the battery.

I thought about putting something like a towel bar mounted near where the deck meets the hull in the port lazzerette.  I could simply hang the docklines there.

I still have some storage room in other areas.  I just want to clean things up to make them more accessible. 

I just bought my bottom paint.  PCA Gold from West Marine for $150 on sale!  NICE!

This worked out well for me.  Just a wooden bracket screwed to the port bulkhead in the cockpit locker with holes to feed the bungies through.  I can reach in and get lines by feel without having to bend in and see.

I like the one on the bulkhead.  I have a hose there and I just mounted a storage place for my 2 cycle oil.  I was thinking of doing something similar by mounting something against the hull.  I will have to glass a few small pieces of wood to anchor the organizer to. 

It seems that in the lazzerettes if you can take advantage of smart vertical storage solutions you get a lot more room and use.  Once I have the ropes clear I will have a lot more room and I may make a place to store a few life jackets and the boat cushion. 

Brackish's solution will also give me a good place to hang my Jackline bag (I have a bag that has 2 jacklines and a harness that I keep in the lazzerette).

I moved my battery charger to the starboard lazzerette.  It sits right under the cockpit floor.  It is an onboard type but it has a plug so the plug runs into the cabin and to an outlet.  I figured that it is a good place to put this charger and it gives me room on the starboard bulkhead for a charge controller for the solar panel when I add that in a month or so.  I can still see the charge status lights but I have to look from the port lazzerette and stick my head in the locker to see it. 

Any suggestions on ways to cover up old holes in teak?  I moved the batter selector switch and I am left with 5 holes that are 1/4" in the back of the starboard storage shelf area.

If anyone is interested:  Batteries Plus sells golf cart batteries.  They are not Trojans but almost as good (Duracell).  These are good batteries.  6V and 215 Amp hours. Price for 2 batteries was about $212.

I got a lot of work done on Saga today.  Her outboard got a brand new water pump impeller and all new gaskets.  The lower unit fluid was changed as well.

After that I got most of my bottom paint done.  I just have the bunks and some parts of the bottom of the keel to do.  I am still trying to figure out how that is going to work out and what technique I will use to paint those areas.  ugh!

do you have keel rollers or a board?  I have rollers and what worked well for me was to cut a couple of 2 X 8 chunks that would fit between the rollers on areas that had already been painted.  Then a couple of jacks under the boards.  Jack it straight up about four inches or so (loosen the winch strap first) and that will give access to those points that are touching the rollers and the area under the bunks.  If you are not on a perfectly level surface port to starboard it may come up from only one bunk and rest on the other.  In that case do one side then lower and strap that side to the trailer and jack it up again to do the other.  Worked like a charm.  I also removed the keel guides when I painted to give more access to the keel. 

I started out trying to lower the bunks, but when the first lock bolt broke off I went to plan B.

Brackish....You are the man.  That was what I was thinking about.  Two jacks with a board between the jack and the keel.  My biggest concern was the stability.  I can put the boat in a paved driveway for this process so that should help some.  BTW...Rollers would be the answer...and plenty of space between them.  I have already painted MOST of the keel.
