Hello,

Is the Oberdorfer #N202M16 a direct replacement on the Universal M12? I've been looking at rebuild kit prices
for Sherwood and given those prices this pump looks like a good deal and the rebuild parts are cheaper too.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hmm. According to the M12 service manual the engine was shipped at various times with Sherwood, Johnson, and Oberdorfer pumps. Universal's part number for the Oberdorfer pump was 301357. Maybe you can cross reference that to Oberdorfer's part number.

Have a look at the parts manual on the universal/westerbeke website. You might find that several of these manufacturer's otherwise identical and same part number pumps were built with either one of two different pump shafts. There will be either a male or female end fitting on the end of the pump shaft where it inserts into the engine block. This is an import detail when shopping for a replacement pump or if the shaft has seal groves worn in it and needs replacement during the rebuild process. With the wrong shaft end fitting, the proper part number pump will not mate with the pump drive shaft inside the engine. Once you pull your pump off, it will be readily apparent as to which end style is on the pump and which end is inside the engine.

If you haven't got a copy already, Peter Compton's book Troubleshooting Marine Diesels is an excellent resource.

Thanks for the replies. I was searching using the Oberdorfer part numbers but searching using the Universal part number
turned up good info. the -15 and -16 pumps look to be identical in performance and construction except the -16 has
larger threaded NPT inlets. It may even be the same casting. Everything I can find says the -15 is the proper pump.

Good info here: http://www.yachtsupplydepot.com/engine-and-mechanical-/oberdorfer-pump-universal-301357-ob-n202m-15.html

The full service manual is a really good resource. It's written expecting that non-experts will be doing major work.
These folks are a Universal distributor and they offer it for free download:

I suggest getting it printed 3-hole punched so you can take notes in it.

These folks will send you a bit of the Kubota Z400 parts list so you can cross ref with the Universal parts lists,
the diagrams are all the same. You can buy the Z400 parts book but it's every part of the riding lawn mower
when you just want the engine. The tractor parts are much cheaper. Search for the G3200 tractor.

Kevin & Wes:
Thanks for the scoop....I spent a BUNCH of time trying to match up Kubota with Universal parts with no success.
The service manual is being printed out as I type this.
