You may have seen or heard accounts of a tragic boating accident in Lake Michigan on 1 June off Chicago harbor. A boat carrying four passengers apparently caught fire, took on water, and sank leaving a trail of debris. One survivor, hypothermic but alive, was pulled from the water by fishermen the next morning.

A 26 year old attorney, Ashley Haws, originally from Green Bay was picked up and pronounced dead. Two others are still missing.

Fire on board is the recreational boaters nightmare. In our cold Lake Michigan waters, survival alternatives are limited. Nighttime flare signals, Life Jackets, and distress calls all help. Electronic homing devices are within dollar reach of most recreational boaters.

Please consider inviting your boating friends and neighbors to come to the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club on Saturday 14 June for a hand's on demonstration of emergency signals and fire fighting information and practice. The affair begins at 1:00 pm on the waterfront. This practice is free...bring any expired flares or meteors that you wish to dispose of.
