Butterfly

Wow - reefed the main and sailed in 20kt winds today with jib out too. Pretty wild. I am always concerned about all the rigging integrity , but so far so good.

Question, at the end of the boom is a "bolt" that the butterfly attaches to (the butterfly being the toggle plate that the main sheet and topping lift attach to). The bolt goes into the back of the mast boom. My "bolt" is very loose and cannot be tightened. Whats it attached to on the inside of the boom? There must be a captive nut of some sorts.

Mine looks exactly like a fully threaded bolt which wobbles around. I wonder if it is a jury-rig from the PO.

I am concerned it is not correct and wondering if I should replace it. Anybody?

(what is the entire fitting on the rear of the mast called, in case i need to replace the entire end cap, I am looking in the parts list and dont know exactly what to look for)

    mine was like that too. it had a boom that the main would roll up on hince the need for the loose bolt. sailed it for 6 years and not a problem. i sailed mine in a number of high wind conditions and never felt that the rigging wasnt up to the job. its pretty robust given the small sail area. mine was original for an 81

No problem. The cast end cap for the boom has skirts that slip into the tube's end and is secured through the skirt with screws or rivets to the tube. Not a stressed piece

The cap is drilled and a bolt and your 'butterfly' goes through the cap and the threaded end is fitted with a nyloc locking nut.
If you care to look-see if the nyloc nut is still secure you'll have to remove the cast end cap.

Plenty strong enough and yes the bolt is suppose to rattle around if you reef. A carry over even when 'Jiffy Reef' came along and rolling the boom was no longer required.

The ends or caps come from Dwyer's, right out of the catalog.

I've taken off the casting at the end of the boom, no way to tighten the bolt all the way down, threads don't allow for it.

23$, not much left of my season anyway, I'll replace it over the winter
