I just bought a 1981 CP 23, hull 107.  She has never been named.  This is my second CP.  I had a 1981 CP 19....It was my first boat, and I sold her to my best friends.  After owning several other boats from various manufacturers, Seaward 25, Southcoast 21, Catalina 22, I am back to ComPac because of their quality and looks...

I have been refitting and updating my 23 for about a month....I just recently purchased a bowsprit kit from Hutchins..The bobstay they sent me was 5 inches too long...Has anyone else had this problem?  They have been very helpful and it surprised me that they sent a part that was so far off the mark.

Also, since putting on the new bow sprit I have very little extra adjustment in the backstay or headstay when reconnecting the rigging after trailering.   Anyone else have this problem?  Any suggestions or solutions?

I really appreciate the info on this site and have already incorporated several ideas into the refitting of my boat...  i.e. outboard mount on front of trailer, lazy jack idea, mast raising suggestions, bow sprit addition, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions....By the way...my maiden voyage in the new boat will be this weekend, providing I get a new bobstay and the weather cooperates..

Welcome back to ComPac!  I too owned a ComPac and sold it before owning two other boats.  I came back for the same reason you did, quality.  I purchased my "new" (1979) boat about a month ago and have her sailing on Lake Travis.  We went out yesterday in winds of 20+ and had a great time.  Hopefully, your day went as well as ours.  :-)

Hey, John....Lake Travis is beautiful...I bought my Seaward 25 down there in 1998...The lake was a little low when I sailed it, but it was still beautiful...Ya'll are about 6 hours from me, but you live in one of the most beautiful parts of Texas...

I didn't get to sail this weekend, but I will make up for it tomorrow afternoon... :)

Thanks for the reply!

Tim,
If the winds today over where you are were like they were here you were better off not going out.  You would have spent more time motoring than sailing.  I considered going back out today but decided it was time to make a fresh batch of homebrewed beer instead.  That was more productive than sitting in the middle of the lake and watching the sails flap.

I agree about Lake Travis although Canyon Lake is really my favorite.  I lived in San Marcos and sailed Canyon until about 4 years ago when I moved back to Austin after a 25 year absence.  The Hill Country is the only place I've ever wanted to live but I could do without the crowds and traffic of Austin.  Oh well....

Good Luck tomorrow!

Hey, John...

I know you are on Lake Travis and it is absolutely beautiful.   I am in far NE Texas but keep my boat at the Shreveport  Yacht Club in Shreveport LA ( about 20 miles away).

Have you ever thought about trying to organize a group of Compac owners to either sail in Austin, Kemah, or maybe in my part of Texas/Louisiana?  I know they are trying to organize a group in the Midwest, but that's a little far to trailer.   You are more centrally located and Kemah allows access to Galveston Bay and the restaurants of the Boardwalk...All we have up here is a decent yacht club, good food and music, and gambling for anyone that might like to try that, but Cross Lake is a little small at approx 8500 acres.

At SYC we have 2 cp 19s, 1 cp23, 1 cp16, and someone showed up with a picnic cat the other day.

I was curious to see if you were interested in  seeing who else might want to do this.

Thanks

Tim

PS   Had a great sail Wed!

Tim,
I don't know how many CP's there are on Travis but I don't think there are very many.  I saw a boat at a distance a couple of weeks ago that might have been a CP-16 but I wasn't sure.  My experience has been that these boats aren't common on the Highland Lakes.

A get-together would be a great idea but a major undertaking.  I'm sure my marina would welcome the extra business for a weekend.  I could talk to the manager and see what they would be willing to do.  The marina is on the Sandy Creek arm of the lake and as such is pretty quiet but within a few minutes sailing of the main body of the lake.  As far as Kemah is concerned, that is a great location but I don't have a trailer for my boat.  Kemah is about 4 hours away from Austin.  I know because my parents used to live on the Bolivar Peninsula (Crystal Beach) and I went down there on a regular basis.  I think we would have to find an owner down there to set things up since I have no contacts on the coast.  Why don't you post a message on this board asking how many people would be willing to trailer their boats to Austin for a weekend?  Once we have an idea of the number I can talk to the marina manager.  The marina changed ownership recently (they're having the Grand Opening next weekend) and, like I said, they would probably welcome an event that draws attention to their facility.  Not only that, but there is a regular party that begins on Friday night and continues through the weekend.  These are live-aboards and others.  More people would just add to the fun.

Take care,
John
