In 1968 in Glenview, Illinois at Bill's Texaco Service and Firestone Tire Dealership we had a stranger drove in saying something was wrong with her left front tire.
The hub on her Cadillac had welded it's self to the spindle!

Well Earl our hard nosed WWll Marine mechanic grabbed the Mexican smoke ratchet and burned off the offending parts right down to the spindle, and gave me the emery cloth strips to clean-up and polish his handy work. Earl walked over to NAPA and grabbed a seal, inner and outer races and bearings. Hand packed them with grease and reassembled the assembly.

She drove away back toward home on the Southside of Chicago. Even though I don't speak what is now known as Ebonics, I think she left bitching about the price.

Let me preface my remarks. Any Performance Trailer may have been fitted with these bearings.

"Too hot to hold" is about 160 degrees F. Which is fine.

Too small to read? Hold the Ctrl down and tap + to enlarge. Hold and tap - to shrink.

Hey Skip:
Thanks for the scoop.  Bought the 1 ton axle for our C16 from SIX ROBBLEES' INC, a northwestern company.  It did not come with any instructions so I used regular seals, packed the bearings normally, included some grease between the bearings, and added a couple squirts after I assembled it.  I did not want to blow the inner seals.  They stayed cool to the touch after a 2200 mile pull towards the right hand coast. I did not see any grease on the rims.

We will see how it holds up when launched in salt water later this summer.

Thanks again for the scoop.
