So I have a cp 27, my santana 20 and my 13ft banshee, I have to resist the urge to claim this prize.  No pictures but for free what can you want, I just talked to the guy briefly and he still had it.

if it was cheap I might think scam, but its hard to scam free!  Ive seen somebody be a foot off of a boats measurment plenty of times when they dont know what they have.  Be optimistic!!!  I had the thought of getting and putting the m12 diesel from my 27 in it and restoring.

I called him as well and it's not a scam. You might want to make sure he is the actual owner, though, as he has "lost the title."

A friend of mine recently purchased a Potter 15, 1985 here in Calif. the boat had no CF numbers, no pink slip but he did find the hull number.

When he tried to register it at DMV he was questioned  by two CHP Officers who were called in by DMV as the boat was reported stolen some 10 years ago!

They took his information and the name, address of the person he bought the boat from who they later question.

It turns out, the person who sold the boat had recently bought the house he was in from the bank as a forecloser. when he bought the house that included all the stuff that was on his one acre lot including the boat!

The boat was imponded as stolen property and is in a storage lot, the bank (who was the owner of the boat when reported stolen) does not want the boat.

The storage yard is charging $45.00 per day and at some point are going to sell the boat. they have had the boat since October!

My friend is out his $1200 and no boat.

I don't know if one can check a Hull number with the local authorities before buying or not but I would at least have a bill of sale and driver license of from the person I'm buying from.

yea its good to do homework first, you can do that with boats registered from sc on a website.  I got really lucky with my santana 20.  I got it for under 11 dollars from boat angel on ebay, it was advertised as no title.  luckily when I went to pick up the boat I asked the owner about it not having a title, he replied that he had one but he had lost it.  I just happened to have a sc bill of sale on hand so with that I can get a title since it was in his name last, sweet!  There again, its always good to know whats going on.

I was thinking today that the free boat would make a great canidate for not only a diesel but a pilothouse as well.  Its been very tempting but its 10 hours away from me and I have enough going  on.

What Glenn described happen to me when I tried to resurrect a baha bug I found out in a lot next to my house. The "owners" showed up after I put a new engine in it a demanded it back. They said all the stuff I had put in it was unauthorized repairs and they were not going to pay a dime. It was not their first scam. They gave me a 45 minute lead time to come and pick it up. In the pouring rain I stripped all but my new windshield and tires off. I put the old engine under the hood and told them rent was 50 a day and get it off my property now...
That was the first and last time I ever removed an engine in 15 minutes. The rest of the upgrades took a little longer. They were not prepared to tow it, but after a while in the rain they were gone. A week or so later all my Snap On tools went missing. I guess they got the last laugh.

When I was 15 our house was on a canal, most people in this area had some sort of little fishing boat behind their house as well.  After a storm I noticed a john boat upside down almost underwater at the end of the canal, it sat there for a month or so. Well nobody got it, it didnt have registration so I flipped it over, got the water out and paddled home.  It leaked but I fixed that stuff, no biggie, after a couple months a couple came to my doorstep saying its their boat.  Being young I let them take it back, but the man was going to use MY oars to take it home with, I said those are mine.  he said he needed them to get it home, I didnt let him use my oars and he had to wade though the water to get it home.  Had I know more at the time I would have said I salvaged it!
