Hello,
I am the new owner or a Com PAC 23/2. The Osprey.
I am a newby to the sailing world and am learning as fast as I can.

Questions:
Does anyone have a way to install mosquito screens in a Perko 5 inch porthole?

Has anyone replaced the navigation lamps with LED lamps?

I want to install a depth sounder, but don't want to cut a hole in my boat. What options do i have?

Thanks
Tim

Shawn

Replacement led bulbs in the navigation lights works well. Be sure to get 'warm' bulb for the red/green front light.

For a depth sounder you can get a transducer that shoots through the hull so no need to cut a hole. It epoxies in place.

hi tim,   welcome to the forum..   as shawn has already demonstrated, there are lots of friendly folks here who will offer creative solutions to the problems that we all run into from time to time.    i love the name osprey for your boat.    where are you located?    we live in pa, but out boat is in barnegat bay nj.     any pics of your boat?     jt

Hi Tim:
   I also own a 23/2...1985 hull #321. What year and # are you...maybe we're cousins?
If you use the search thing at the top right hand side, you'll find more information than you care to look at. I've never installed the screens in the round Perkos but will be interested to hear the answers. I think some larger size PVC pipe fits right in the outside of the portlights and can be cut to thin pieces, screen epoxied to the PVC and then it fits into place. Sounds too simple, huh. I personally haven't tried this.
I have a Raymarine depthsounder and I did cut the hole in the bottom. Well, there was one there already so I enlarged it. I'm not crazy about thru hulls but she still floats, as of this afternoon. Be sure to coat the cut edges with epoxy to seal up the cut and then imbed the transponder in 5200. No problemo.
   Where do you sail?

Thanks for the ideas and help.

My boat is a 1984, hull # 275.

I believe I'm the 3rd owner. I'm currently sailing around Nashville Tennessee.

Does anyone have any suggestions for depth sounders that are epoxied into the inside of the hull.

Adnoh,

As far as depth sounders, Hawk eye is a good one
http://www.hawkeyeelectronics.com/
They mount in the hull, no holes drilled. One guy on here siliconed his in.  Said it still works great (siliconing is against the directions)

I own one, but havent put it in yet, but I plan to install it with silicone as well.

I am the boat tech on the forums, and recommend Life Caulk if doing thru hulls. I do probably 10 or more a year and have never had issue with em. Simple Job. When a thru hull with 5200 leaks, you are lucky to get it out in one piece..... Life Caulk, not a problem.  Things age, 5200 has its place, but it isnt on a thru hull in my opinion.

As far as the port screens go, I am in the same boat..... well, a 19....... I have 4 inch and am looking for a source.
I might have found a source for the actual screens and am looking into it now. These are a bronze screen made for the ports. I plan to email the company on monday if i have time otherwise tuesday.
I will ask about the 5 inch screens as well.

lastly, the LED lights are a awesome Idea, make sure that the bulbs you get will work well with the fixture. the all around light will need a certain bulb with the leds all the way around it. I have seen them, but saw the price and I ran away to do other projects.... LOL

With regard to the LED's it is a good idea but you have to consider your cruising profile to determine if worth the cost.  My longest cruise has been four days.  During those four days I have run the motor, which has charging output, only when necessary for approaching a dock or anchorage, or when the wind quits, usually a grand total of about two hours over the four days.  I have yet to run my group 27 house battery down to where it is no longer effective.  Have not had to switch to the start battery which is there for a backup.  And that is with an anchor light on for four nights.  Back at my home marina, I stay plugged in so batteries always topped off.

So I made up a bill of material for replacement and will probably do so if and when the prices come down a bit or I hit a sale.  But it is not a high priority.

Are you on trailer or in the water in Nashville?  If so, where?  Son lives in Hendersonville, I go up there a lot.

I'm on the water.
I have been sailing with the Percy Priest Yacht Club.

They are a real good group and have been teaching me how to sail.
They are based out of the Hamilton Creek Marina.

As for the LEDs, i hadn't expected the cost.  :-\
Currently looking at the bulbs on the Sailor Sams website. They claim to be able to use your current fixture and just use his bulb.

Tim;

I just moved my Compac 19 to Nashville Shores;  I think I saw your boat today, and took a chance you were on the CPYOA.  Would love to see your boat up close as i was debating between a 19 and a 23, but then found the 19.  I used to keep mine on Old Hickory Lake, and just moved it to NS about 2 months ago.

Call me when you get a chance;  great to have another Compac owner so close.
