This is the bicentennial celebration of the Battle of Lake Erie.  There is a thread started in the journeys and destinations sections, but it hasn't received a lot of traffic.  So I thought I'd post a link to it here:

The Battle of Lake Erie reenactment is part of the Tall Ship Challenge 2013, here are some links for those sites as well:

This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see them recreating such a historical battle, and a rare chance to see so many ships in one place.  You can tour the boats, watch the reenactment, or even pay to be a crew member on one of the ships during the battle!  Lots of cool stuff to see and do!

I checked yesterday online, and there is plenty of space left as East Harbor State Park, which has access to Lake Erie.  I have never stayed at this park, but I did scout it last year on a trip to Cedar Point, and it looked nice.  I plan to make a reservation in the next few days.  FYI - you have to reserve Fri - Sat - Sun for this holiday weekend.

I made a quick reference map on my Navionics app.

Point 1 is the location of the original battle.

Point 2 is Put-In-Bay.

Point 3 is Catawba State Park/campground with lake access and ramps.

As the crow flies the park is approximately 6 nm to Put-in-Bay, not to bad, but my question is if the reenactment is truly taking place at the original battle site?  Because it is approximately 10 nm to the northwest of Put-in-Bay.  Would they really do this so far out onto the lake?  Just trying formulate a plan for where I'd like to be to take in as much of it in as we can.  I'm also trying to decide if we are towing the boat or the camper out there...  I really want this to be a trip my kids will remember for the rest of their lives!

Here's a quote from the site about the view from Perry's Victory monument on Put-in-Bay:
"The observation gallery offers a panoramic view of western Lake Erie. South Bass Island on which the monument stands, is the second largest of the American islands. You can usually see Middle Bass Island, North Bass Island, Johnson's Island, Kelley's Island, Pelee Island in Canada, and the Ohio mainland of Catawba Point and Marblehead Peninsula. On a real clear day you can see as far as Detroit, Toledo and Cleveland."

That's a good question as to where the actual reenactment will take place.  I will try to check into that.  If it is at the actual site, there are come marinas to the west of Sandusky/Port Clinton that would probably be a better place to stay in that they would be closer to the actual battle site.

I'm just curious if anyone went to the event.  I was told there was nearly 100,000 on put-in-bay that weekend and the Fox marina was holding boats 8-10 at a time deep--most boats had to anchor outside of the harbor and taxi into town.

A madhouse indeed.

It's hard to imagine that many people on such a tiny island.

Despite the mayhem, I do kinda regret not going, but had other plans to attend to.

i live outside a town of 1300 and at times it's too crowded for me, i can't imagine being on a small island with 100,000 people!

maybe that's why i spend so much time alone on the water?

I don't regret no being there. I sail for west and welaxation, you silly wabbit! I'm quite content sailing alone...don't need 99,999 other boaters to keep me company.

Not for me, can't take crowds any more.  My sailing season just started a couple of weeks ago.  Took some friends out on the night of the full moon and we were the only boat on the lake.  A little sail, then when the wind died, Sangria and supper while watching a beautiful moon rise.
