I've gotten into a lot of ugly situations out on the water, many times from ignorance, sheer stupidity, or just bad seamanship.  But somehow, I've always made it out alive, with no damage to my boat or injuries to my crew. I used to think it was just luck, but now I think I know better.  Knowlege, intelligence, and seamanship can only take you so far, and one day you may find yourself in a situation when even those won't keep you out of trouble. But I've been fortunate that I've always had my black box aboard, and I've always been conscientious about keeping it topped off.   John Vigor articulates it better than I ever could.  Enjoy!  It's the best advice a seaman can get, or receive.
