My latest issue of Blue Water Sailing came in the mail today (I have no idea how I got on their mailing list! I never subscribed), and lo and behold, on page 13 is a full-page ad from Hutchins showcasing a  a new product: a Pilot House version of their popular CP23.

I've always liked pilot houses, they give standing head room on small boats at anchor, and greatly increase comfort in foul weather underway.  There are only two drawbacks, they ruin the beauty of a boat's lines, and they present a lot of windage and exposed windows,  a weak point when offshore in a blow..

But Compacs aren't really blue water cruisers, and the advantages of a pilot house in both rainy and sunny Florida are obvious.

I salute Hutchins on their new product and wish them the best of luck with it.  I can't get over how these guys keep on coming up with new ideas.  The CP23ph can be seen on the Com-Pac Yachts web page at

I like the pilothouse boats and how they look.  When I was much younger I was on christmas break from school helping move a 44ft center cockpit down the ICW.  We were still in SC and it was COLD!!!  One boat was heading north and she was a pilothouse, as the boat passed a guy inside wearing a T shirt tipped his coffee cup at us in total comfort.
