A Com-Pac Co-op Boat Swap???

Anyone ever thought about this?

I live in Tampa Bay, just around the corner from where each and everyone of our wonderful boats were made. And while arguably one of the best aspects of our boats is their trailerabilty, I simply cannot drive to many of the places I yearn to sail my boat due to lack of time. I would love to sail the Great Lakes, The North East. And if ever lucky enough...the San Juan's, and of coarse, all the places in between.

Wouldn't it be great if we had something where we could fly in to a far away location in just a few hours and sail a familiar boat in a new and exciting location with out all the hassels of long distance trailering?

I would be willing to let a competent fellow Com-Pac owner sail my boat for a few days if the offer was mutual.

I really haven't put a whole lot of thought into all the technical details yet, so I would love to hear some of your thoughts and suggestions.

Any takers?

Intersting proposal:
I once swapped my apartment and car for two weeks with someone in Paris for his apartment and car for two weeks. Worked out great, I'm from the Boston area and the ad was in the Boston Globe.Except for the parking tickets he got in Boston (which he paid for) it was a win win for both of us.

I am not interested sadly, but here is why, and no offense to anyone with these statements:

Usually what I find getting on and off different boats (and in my job I have been on a lot of boats) I see that a lot aren't taken very good care of...... sometimes its the owner, sometimes the crew....
Just in the last few weeks we had where a guy was crewing for a racer sailor who this year decided to stop racing for the year and not use the boat often.... The crew member then took advantage of this situation and went on using the boat..... he was a young guy, so obviously a young lady was with him for "night sailing" and the like.......No one thought any different. This crew guy was using it a lot too!

They ended up getting caught (as we just figured the owner and this gentleman had a agreement so we never said anything...) and because a halyard was lost, when the owner came to use the boat, he ended up spending more time retrieving the lost halyard. SUPER PISSED..... which opened the door to all of this that is unfolding now.....and he knows now who was using the boat!

My major point is, what ends up happening is people don't take care of their own things like others do..... My boat for instance has all new lines, and I like the feel of that, and when one isn't right, I will replace it. I have been on boats rigged with "Lowe's" lines, that break down, feel chalky, etc. Not what I would want to play with.

Also condition of boats...... people say how nice and clean mine is, (I am actually quite picky) and frankly would be offended to use some one elses who didnt treat their boat the same way. But then again I am picky.......It would be hard to go a long way to a rough boat....

I suppose if the two had a solid agreement that it could work out, but I know I couldn't. The idea is a good concept if all the details could be ironed out. Another thing to look at is style of sailing, some are harder than others....... how would damage control be looked at? And lastly, a issue I am dealing with now that I cant go into, is insurance..... how would stuff be covered.....

Stuff to think about.

Very cool idea...I'd be interested. I'd love to fly somewhere warming in the winter and sail aboard a Compac. And I'm the kind of guy who leaves things in better condition than when I found them...the Golden Rule just makes sense, don't you think?
This is something that could be coordinated here at the site. I'll be watching to see if this developes.

What about Boat insurance?  It's pretty cheap, I just did an online quote with progressive for curiosity and the cheapest was $100/year for basic coverage, and the most expensive was $274/year with full coverage including the trailer and personal property loss.  It's a really cool idea, although I'm too inexperienced to dare take out anyone else's boat...  How about a rental agreement that outlines basic liability/responsibility in the event of an accident or damage?

I love the idea, just somebody else touching my boat, well you may as well try and touch my wife and see if you get away with it!  Well maybe not that extreme but you get the idea, youd have to know the person and trust them.   It may not be to bad long as both people own the same boat so they know how the boat will handle.
