Vulnerable to Capsizing?

OK... stupid newbie question... I am intrigued by this Great Circle thing but I am confused by the route after reaching the NNJ and NY area... how does one get from there to the Great Lakes without a trailer?

I'm not looking at charts right now but I think you'd go up the Hudson, hang a left at the Erie Canal into Lake Ontario then to Lake Erie. But I'll be the first to admit that I'm pretty good at getting lost while driving. Check www.greatloop.com
Definitely not a stupid question. The only way I know this is I bumped into a Canadian guy in Barnegat Bay (NJ) on a cold December day a few years ago who had worked in Canada, saved his money, bought a small sailboat and sailed east through the canal, down the Hudson and came down the coast into Barnegat Inlet where I found him. He was aground with a fouled jib and really no idea where he was. His destination was the Bahamas but he never made it that far, only reaching Georgia. I wrote a short story about this which was published in "Messing About in Boats".

Talk about thread drift :) Thats pretty funny Bob, a Canuk who gets marooned in Georgia. Sounds like a country western song.

Bob23

I suppose it's the meandering mind that contributes to thread drift. Or, in an extreme case, it could lead to thread capsizing in which case we have returned to the original subject with a twist: Are these threads vunerable to capsizing?
If I can find the story, I'll try to re-write it here. Bob Wicks, editor of "Messing" was kind enough to publish it so I'll get his permission first. It's a semi-true story!

It has been a long time since I did this, 1978 or so. But yes, up the Hudson to the Erie Barge Canal (you can still see the path the the mules and horses walked pulling the barges) but if I remember right It drops into Lake Erie, not Ontario. When I did it we went through Lake Erie up Lake Huron and then down Lake Michigan. We picked up the Mississippi and eventually ended up in Salisaw OK. From Point Pleasant NJ to Oklahome 32 days.

If I did it (or rather when) I want to go up the St. Lawrence seaway and then bypass Niagara falls. A lot longer, but I hear it is beautiful.

Bob23

Good idea bypassing Niagara Falls, Newt. It's a long way down! Indeed, Wiggs: The canal does tie into Lake Erie. Guess that's why it's called the Erie Canal not the Ontario Canal. Such brilliance! Is there alot of motoring? Seems like there would be.

Oh comon, my Compac can do that! Some guy sailed over in a barrel didn't he?? The Erie is completely motoring, from what I understand :)

Shows what little I know about such things... I had no idea the Hudson went that far... newt, I live about 100mi wnw of Bob23 so if I can swing the timing and if Bob does not mind my taking him up on his offer to take the newbie out in his area perhaps we both can meet up with you somewhere as you are passing through.

Oh... guess I should include the words vulnerable and capsizing so I at least give the appearance of a meager attempt to seem on topic...

Don t kid yourselves any and all boats can capsize and any and all boats can turn turtle including ours.  However in the 18 years we ve sailed the waters from Anclote Key to Boca Grande we have only been laid over twice.   Once was an accidental jibe in high winds when the main sheet locked and the other was on Tampa Bay on a beautiful day - winds around 10-15 normal waves - about 2 feet at max.

We were having cold pizza for lunch.   The tiller was tied off and the main cleated and we were doing about 5kn with no cause for concern.  Then bam we were over - I remember the water hitting the coaming and come up to the portholes - we always dog them down - In less time that it took to read this we were back up.  It happened so fast neither of us could swallow our pizza in time to comment.

It must have been a micro burst but there were no storms in sight.    The accidental jibe was a lot scarier but in neither case did I see how close the mast was to the water although on the jibe the boom got wet.   Don t sell the boat over it - I d rather be in my Compac than any other boat in this class.

Had to cancel our planned 200 yard cruise tonight - we are catching some of the tropical storm - The forcast calls for 25 kn winds and feeder band storms tomorrow - no point in asking for trouble.  Guess I ll work on converting our dingy to a sailboat- getting tired of all that rowing don t you know   Matt

You have to motor on the Erie Canal at least onder the bridges.  There might also be some problems with mast spreaders or the mast hitting the sides of some of the locks.  I traveled the canal on a larger boat and once the mast was down it stayed there.
