Spiders Taking Over My CP-16

Last year my wife and i purchased a CP-16 for our lake in TN. The boat sails fine but an interesting variety of spiders have taken up residence and seem to enjoy the boat as much as we do. We've tried the typical spider sprays but they only work for a few days. Any suggestions on what might keep these little irritating stowaways on shore?

My 16 only had mice and flees in it when I got it out of a corn field.  I set off those bug bomb foggers inside and left it closed up for a few days.  After that I put a fan in the hatch and started the clean out.  Good luck with the spiders!

What lake in Tennessee are you on Cpt Don?  And welcome to the site.

Capt. Bob   Mind if I call you CB for short?  We have a lot of Bobs to keep straight here.  So many Bobs, in fact, it looks like a string of lobster traps.

I have a dock on Smith Mountain Lake in SW Virginia, and to keep the spiders at bay I use this :

Demon WP does the trick on shore and on my boats for approx 2-3 months at a time.

I haven't had any significant problems myself, but my 16 is stored in my garage and well, there are spiders around.  It happens.  I have to admit to a nagging fear of them infesting the cabin though...  Thanks to Don for broaching the subject.

Tim - Thanks for the link.  How do you apply this to your boat?  Do you spray inside of the cabin or is it more of an exterior treatment in the cockpit and on deck?  I'm a bit leary of using poisons that could be hazardous and/or a carcinogen to people - especially in an enclosed area such as the cabin.

capt don,

there is something about living close to fresh water that attracts spiders.   we don't have a problem with them in the 19, but they are a problem around the lights on the house.  a farmer friend of mine claims the fruit of the osage orange tree will keep spiders at bay.  he says he places the whole fruit in the cabs of his combines and in his cellar with great success. these are quite sticky, so if you give them a try, i'd place them in an open plastic bag.

Joe,

I apply it to the dock surfaces, mooring lines, hatch, port and lazarette areas, and oddly enough, the cockpit scuppers. I don't use it inside the boat, only the spider traps there.

I live in Fairfield Glade on Lake Dartmoor. There are now two Cp 16's on the lake.

I get a few spiders occasionally, but no infestations.  My problem is dirt daubers.  Seem to want to build dirt homes in the boat.  Make a real mess.

Osage Orange, known as Bodock in this area, are dangerous.  The trails I run on have trees adjacent.  I've had near misses many times from falling fruit, and those things are hard and heavy.  Wonder if they would keep squirrels out of the attic.:)

I just made a beautiful long bow out of osage orange that a friend cut for me on his farm.  It sat in a corner of the garage and seasoned for 6 or 7 years and turned out real pretty.  Shoots good too!
