a morning sky
crowded with gray cotton balls
you smell the hint of rain
but the birds are out
crows, anhinga, loons, herons, geese, swollows

gently, miss leah tacks back and forth
up the lake against three knots of wind
a mile.
then we can turn on the northern reach
the little compass verifies it.

coves and side creeks a plenty
when the evening comes,
for putting the anchor down,
putting out the kerosene anchor light
and lighting candles in the cabin

That's what sailing is all about!
