C23 bowsprit bobstay

For the winter project, I am looking to install the factory bowsprit on my older C23:  Below is a photo of another 23 with the bowsprit I took some time ago.  The bow eye, for the lower end of the bobstay, seems to be higher up on on the stem than the newer 23's- I think- pretty close to the location of my bow eye currently.  Am I correct that the bobstay connection was moved lower at some point over the years?  Would it be worthwhile to remount the bow eye lower on my boat?

Thanks

I would not drill 2 more holes. I'd just retrofit to the original eye. My 1985 has a plate behind the eye like in the photo. I don't see why the factory would change the location but I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything. Perhaps a call or emial to Hutchins would be helpful.

I am going to replace my bowsprit with an all metal one (similar to Valiant's) Do you want the old one?

I don't know if the eye was moved lower, but my 23 IV is similar to the picture you show.  However, if you look at the photo of the newer models they have a solid rod bobstay that looks to be not adjustable and the lower mount is much further up on the bow.  I think Bob is right, talk to Hutchins about why they did that.  What the new configuration does is give you a spot between the eye and lower bobstay mount that you can nest the bow in a chock.  On mine, the bottom of the bobstay hits the chock and causes it to cut or crack.  Starting from scratch you might want to stay it like the new models.

Thanks everyone.  Brackish, I see what you are referring to with regard to the strut:  On the Compac website they show both some sort of SS strut supporting the pulpit and another photo shows what looks to be a conventional wire bobstay with the eye mounted low on the stem.  I will call Hutchins next week and see what they have to say about this and revert.

Thanks Newt for the offer on the pulpit.  I already found one from a 23 owner who replaced his with a timber bowsprit.

I spoke with Rich and he confirmed that they now use the SS tubing/strut type bobstay instead of the wire.  I think I will go with the strut and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for for the heads up.

I am still collecting parts for the bowsprit/chainlocker conversion on my older C-23.

Questions for the newer C-23 owners:
Do the chain lockers have a drain at the lower end?
Has anyone fitted a larger oval deck/chain pipe (vs the small round deck pipe) to make it easier to stuff the rode into the locker below?
How many are using Delta anchors and if so does the 14 lb fit well enough in the roller?

Thanks & regards,
Chris

The bow eye is fine where ever it is.
Your going to have to cut that eye off to slip the tang in between to anchor the dolphin.
Measure and have a dolphin stay made to size. Swedged...one piece.
Measure centerline pin to centerline pin.
Try to do away the the factory turnbuckle that the kit comes with.

I hung a bow sprit on a CP-19. Took a day, was easy.
Hardest part was trying to unbolt the eye.
Hint: Just cut it off and punch it through to the inside of the chain locker.
No chain locker drain in these boats. Gets the inside of the boat wet? The line will dry.

You might want to look~see my pictures I posted today. One post back.

Thanks Skip,

I already purchased the SS strut from Compac, and it actually worked out to be less expensive than the bobstay/chainplate combo(!)  The strut mounts high enough on the stem that I do not need to move the bow eye, and there is enough space above and below the eye so that the winch stand can nest around it.  Do you use the small round deck pipe or do you use an oval one?

My 23 IV does not have a drain for the chain locker.  Initially concerned but I've never taken any water or had any mold or mildew in there so I guess it is ok.
My boat came from the yard with an oval deck pipe with a spring close cover.  I like it, can stand up and feed the line/chain in the opening.  I think it has a slide open to disengage the spring, but i just stick it under the furling line.  I imagine retrofitting from round would be easy.
I have the smallest CQR which is a 15, probably the same general dimensions as a Delta 14 and it fits fine.  The channel on the deck (does that have a name?) that has a spring loaded twist pin for the anchor shackle is the right place for mine.  I would imagine that if you don't have it already set you can set it for the specific anchor you have.

Millsy, never changed the round rope pipe. It is factory on my CP-19.
I did TIG up a Sampson post from some scrap aluminium-bronze fuel line.
Here we have the teak wood removed for cleaning and waxing. And clean the hull under the wood.

The original pipe couldn't pass a decent sized shackle or the thimble on my 1/2" rode. I took out the small round pipe and used a rotozip to enlarge the hole for a larger oval hawsepipe.  It makes it much easier to fit the chain and rode down below. I bought a spring loaded SS oval hawsepipe on ebay for about $50. If you do this just be sure you work out the angle on the new pipe to be sure you won't have chafing on the anchor line or the docking lines.

If you anchor frequently and/or want to have fairly oversized ground tackle it is well worth doing. I have a Raya 800 with 38' of 3/8" chain on 300' of 1/2 double braid.
