what size anchor?

What size (weight) anchor have you found to be good for a c-16? Just purchased one with no anchor. Thanks. Patrick

I use an 11-lb Danforth style anchor, seems to work well enough for where I sail (Strom Thurmond Reservoir).  When I purchased my boat, that's about what was on board, used in coastal New England.

I have a 16.5 lb. lewmar claw on 20' of 1/4" chain and 100" of 3/8" nylon which is kept on the bow roller.  I also have a 11lb. Danforth on 15' of 3/8" chain and 100' of 3/8 nylon I keep in the lazerette.

Your choice of anchor type depends on the type of bottom where you sail.

Your choice of anchor size depends on how much holding power you need and how large an anchor you want to handle and stow.

Sand bottoms = Danforth or Claw

Rocky bottom, muck, mud, or clay = Plow or Claw

Lunch Hook = 5 - 7 Lbs (I use a Fortress FX 7 Aluminum Danforth style for a lunch hook)

Overnight in relative calm = 7 - 9 Lbs

Hunkered down in a moderate blow of 15 - 25 knots  = 10 - 15 Lbs minimum

If it is really blowing, 25 knots or more, you will wish that you had a 25 Lb CQR
