Howdy Com-Pac Sailors,

I bought CP-16-334, 1977 vintage with trailer, in late June... I've removed , cleaned and re bedded every piece of hardware since then, I've sailed  the boat about 5 times in various states repair and love her, but I have some trailer questions.

Has anyone experienced keel roller failure? 2 of 3 keel roller mounts cracked within a few hundred miles, and are contorted to the point of replacement. I hate to waste breezy days because of trailer issues, I haul with a '06 Toyota Tundra, slightly higher than most, but could that cause the problem?

I love the support here, and hope someone has an answer.

I replaced my rollers with a 2X12. That's how the factory does now.

That's a much better solution to the poorly designed rollers. Did you do this upgrade while the boat was still on the trailer? Any tricks to lifting the the side bunks or jacking the boat to have enough room underneath?

No, I left it in the water.

Notice the keel guides go all the way down to the keel bunk. Before they were 2x4s and were suspended about 4 inches above the keel bunk. I replaced those with 2x8s and they sit on the bunk now, not suspended with bolts.

Since 2001 the trailer rollers under the CP-19 have been cracked when weighted down.
I see no need to change these rollers out. Any new ones I believe will also soon show radial cracks.
Yes they flatten out. But have not 'failed' to act as rollers. Or fallen off. Adjust the weight on the rollers by carrying the weight on the hull bunks.
Also the keel will not touch all the rollers at the same time. Depends if the hull is winched into the Vee block tightly or not.

Just my two cents.

Skip I was was under the understanding that all the hull bunks are for is to keep the boat from tipping over. all the downward force of the boat should be supported under the keel.

Hi Gents,

Sorry for the delay, but I wanted to let everyone know how nice it turned out. I took Billy's suggestion on the layout, but had figure out how to do it while on the trailer.. I didn't want to risk total support roller failure getting her to the water..

First, I used my floor jack to support side bunk brackets while loosening, and raising the side bunks ever so gently, in half inch increments at a time, then move around the trailer. Yes the boat was being held up with the side bunks, but only for a day or so.. Once the weight was off the rollers and I had enough room to work, I removed the broken forward and middle roller/ bracket assembly, leaving the undamaged aft roller intact and secure.

Next I searched my spare wood for a 2x12, no luck.. What I had on hand was a nice, solid, almost clear, old piece of fir 2"x6"x9'. So I took some measurements, made a cut and had 2 perfect length keel supports, (slight deviation to Billy's' plan) I made a run to Lowe's and picked up some black marine carpet, deck sealer and a few foam rollers.. After covering the lower keel support bunks, I decided to recover the lower guide rails as well, and removed them. At that point I realized I have almost total access to her lower hull, so while I'm at it, might as well get another coat of bottom paint on her, which I did.. Next day, reinstalled the newly recovered guide rails, a couple of stainless L brackets to hold the keel supports, and lowered and leveled the side bunks with the help of my trusty floor jack.. Problem solved for about 20 bucks, looks and works great!

Aye Aye Skipper, I did!

TS Lee bounced up the east coast and stalled in my backyard on Monday, Labor Day, winds 15 sustained, gusting 25 from the north, northwest, but no rain on Monday. With the trailer fixed, I pulled her 40 miles to the lake.. No issues.. After getting lost, my buddy shows up and we put in without issues.. New tactic, I line it up and get out of the truck to protect my baby, then guide him down the next 5 feet 'til she floats off.. Nice an easy..

At lake level, the wind was howling, while waiting for my buddy to park my truck, I secured sails and gear.. When he arrived we shoved off.. We left the dock with main only and in a blink of eye, put 40 yards of water under our bow. Please keep in mind, I am a very novice sailor, until June of this year, never owned a boat, and until August, never sailed.. After tooling around with main only, I decided it's time to raise the jib.. She took off like a bolting horse, heeled over, and became the sailboat of my dreams! With 20 kt. winds, these boats come into their own!

Long story short, at about 3pm Labor Day afternoon, everyone went home due to cold temps and high winds, except us, we stayed out until sundown, hair on fire, and perm'a'grin on our faces... I've found my calling..

I can honestly say, next to flying, sailing my classic CP16 is the most fun I've ever had, ever...

NEWS FLASH!
 Last Saturday, Marty and I caught up with each other at the launch site where he splashes his beloved CP16- Pegasus.
 Following are some secret photos taken during that launch. It really is a blast to personally meet some of the characters who appear here at the site vis cyberland.

In this next photo, Marty is showing us his controversail method of using dishwashing liquid to help launch his 16. I guess you just hadda be there:

Here is Pegasus afloat. Notice the cool red cowl vent. I think it's an intake for the 427 Hemi auxillary engine. Hard to beat the site of a Compac afloat!

  Unfortunately, I didn't have time to sail with Marty- had to go back to work. Too bad, I wouldv'e liked to sail with that crew...maybe next time.

Note on above: The Hemi is not a 427 engine but a 426. The 427 was (is) a Ford and/or Chevy engine. You guys shoulda caught that! C'mon Skip!

Nice pics! And you've solved my naming dilemma- PEGASUS it is! It was good to meet you last Saturday, hopefully we can get together before it gets too cold. Right now I'm already committed for the weekend of 10/15.

 i adapted my trailer in a different way. instead of removing the rollers i replaced than with neoprene ones and made carpeted "skids" to put inbetween each roller to keep the keel from jamming inbetween them and impeding the retrieval process. with the rollers she slides off easily and with the skids she rolls right up onto the trailer slick as you please.

this sounds like a good compromise of both options.
