Happy to report I'm the new owner of a 1987 Com-Pac 16/2.  Flip side is this boat needs a lot of TLC.  Got a lot of questions and my apologies in advance if I have not found answers searching the forums.  FYI, I'm in northern Virginia in a place where no reasonable person should own a sailboat.  This tells you a lot about me.  Orginially from Sturgeon Bay, WI where we sail a small 12-foot beach boat.  Have sailed charter boats in the BVI.  Point is, this boat is one exciting opportunity for us to sail a vessel we can actually go somewhere in!   The boat is currently in the driveway, waiting for me to make space in the garage.  Anyway, here are my questions:

1. Boat was left in the rain with hatches open.  Got mold and some bad wood inside.  Rip it all our and start new?  Anyone done that?
2.  What vehicle works best for towing?  Currently own a 2009 Subaru Forester.
3.  Boat came with a 2.2 HP Mercury.  Need's work.  Will this motor be adequate?
4.  Need new sails.  Suggestions for sources?
5.  Anyone in my area that can suggest places to sail within a reasonable distance of Winchester, VA?

Thanks to all!

Al

Hummm, presently that's where I live, Texas Place and 16th, just off of Utah.

Park our CP-19 at Wama~Lama Lagoon North of BayShip, past the duck pond, left on Bluebird to the dock at Gullhaven beach house.

Got mold? Kill it by scrubbing with a stiff mix of Clorox and water. Or any Phosphoric acid will do as well. Scrub a small portion with a nylon brush from chain locker to the transom. And let the solution sit on the scrubbed mold for about 4 minutes. Don't let it dry out.

The time allows for the lowering of the pH to 4.5 or 4.0, and that kills off the mold and the associated gases given off by the mold doing it's thing. If your feeling rich DuBois Chemical has a dandy product for killing mold and just about everything else used at Packerland Meet Packing in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Soft wood? How soft? What wood? Is it structural or decorative, or both? The vee births, the quarter births, the wood under the mast's tabernacle? Wood in the transom? Can one punch the fist through it? Or when kneeling on it does it flex?...can one fall through the wood?

If you can get the wood dry and able to soak up some resin then I'd roll some on to the questionable wood. People have done this and people have ripped it out. How good is good and how bad is bad?

Your Subaru will tow the CP-16 just fine. In Bob Burgess' book--> Handbook of trailer Sailing <-- Bob has towed his CP-16 all over Florida just fine with a Ford Pinto. In and out of ramps also just fine. I always up-grade all my trailering to a 2" dia ball no matter if its a one inch receiver or a 2 inch receiver on the tow vehicle. A 2" ball is made for both. I saw a Ford Model 'A' towing a West Wight Potter 19, and that's with 40 hp on a good day and with mechanical brakes.

A 2.2 hp two cycle Mercury sounds a little light if your battling a 4 knot current in a river, but on a lake it'll do. Limit the weight in the stern of a CP-16. Cockpit scuppers ride low on the boat. Keep your cuffs dry, minimize the weight. The main metering jet will need to be cleaned out of all that old gas gunk and deteriorated gasohol and oil mix. I have to rod my jet out twice a season on my 5 hp 2 cycle Mercury.

Sails? Tons of lofts around. Pick one in the neighborhood or send the old sails out for cleaning and rehab of the fabric.

Keep us up on how well your doing. Welcome aboard.

Skip,

Thanks for the information.  Most of the interior wood looks OK, but appears bad where it joins the hull.  Bowsprit needs cleaning up, but I think it's OK.

My wife is from Sturgeon Bay, we have a cottage on Sand Bay, west of town.  In her younger days she sailed a hobie out there.  I've got a 12-ft Johnson Mini-scow we sail off the beach.

I tried to attach a photo and will when I figure this out.  And I will report my progress.  There's a ton of information on this site I haven't even found yet!

I gave some tips on posting pics to another sailor, and here they are once more.

" I tried to post pictures, but was unable.  I'd like to know how if someone can tell me how.

David "

1~Join up with Photobucket, free. Then Scan and download to Photobucket [many other such site available as well]
2~Under each picture are a list of codes...
3~For Com Pac Yacht Owners Association site click on 'DIRECT CODE'. You see the word 'copied' appear and then fade out.
As a back up I always go up to edit and click on 'Copy' as well.

4~Then back in the 'post reply' box anywhere where your typing the text of the message, look above at the header and find this line...B  I  U  S  ect...
Look at the next line down. You see a red pinwheel thingy to the left and next to the right a -->  'yellow beach, black line of trees and blue sky'  <-- icon. Click on that.
Where ever the cursor is when that is clicked you'll see {IMG}  {IMG} ...paste the direct code between the two IMG's. Aim carefully, that is where you'll put the cursor and RIGHT click and then click again on the word 'PASTE" to put the direct code between the cursor. If spot on the code will appear between the IMG's.

Hit post and the picture will show up. If not then you were not between the IMG's or the Direct Code did not copy-paste. You can always click modify the message and try again.
