Using the long pin while underway on sail will prevent the use of the downhaul, it will also require two trips to the mast while underway (to place it in position and to remove it when dousing sails).

My practice is to install it when the boat is on the trailer and remove it when the boat is back on the trailer. Sometimes I do it in the channel just to save a bit of ramp time, but it has to be installed for the Bimini to be up and the sail down. I usually want shade from start to finish, so do it on land.

Steve, Joseph's advice on getting the sail parts through the hinge area is what I would have said, had I returned in time.
