Folks!  Well, In looking for a sailboat earlier this month, I ran across a CP-16.  It was older.  They're saying a 1979, but the hull # seems to high to be a 79.  It's hull number's 1540.  Awesome shape for the most part, except for this sickly bright yellow paint inside the cabin.

I'll be bringing it home Sat and spending all weekend making it look good.  Need some new caulking, new tiller, and the rudder could use a coat of bottom paint.  Nothing too too bad though.

Looking forward to learning how to sail it this summer!   :D

Congratulations Sean. You will really like the CP16. This is the place to get your questions answered and share your experiences.

Welcome to the Com-Pac group, I too am somewhat of a newbie, this being my first year with a CP-16 also.  There is a raft of information here and there are many to help with questions.  I have been working on mine a lot too.                                   When and where will you be sailing.

This will actually be my first sailboat.  I too have found a lot of information here as well as in the links.  I'll be sailing in the Delaware Bays and just off the coast of Delaware and NJ.

It needs a lot of work first. It's going to be trailered, but should I still re-bottom paint it or just scrape off the bottom paint and give it one helluva waxing?  Also, it's bare bones in the cabin and the paint if flaky.  Anything decent to do about that?  Or is it just lean it up and repaint so it can flake again?

I'm a freshwater sailor and will leave it on the trailer except for maybe a couple of weeks vacation now and then, so I know nothing about bottom paint.  I bought an unpainted freshwater boat, so I think I will just wax it and call it good.   Maybe one of the old "SALTS" can tell you about bottom paint or there may be something in the archives..   Enjoy your new boat.

Congrats on the new boat.
I can tell you that you are right about the hull number being too high for a 1979. Mine is titled as a 1980 but was made in 1979 and is hull #1014.

This site will help decode the hull number and you will be able to tell exactly when your boat was built.

Hi Sean and welcome to the cp!  I painted the flaky old paint inside the cabin two years ago, my then 12 year-old son did all the scraping (unbeknownst to me), I was delighted and grabbed some white latex flat and headed in for a two hour job with a 3 inch brush.  Four hours later I was done, but have not regretted it a bit.  I refused to work in such close quarters with any VOC paint, and it appears to have bonded well.  As for bottom paint, we did that too in '03.  It's important for any boat which will be left in the water (as we do about 8 weeks), and especially for freshwater, as it can permeate the glass without a protective coat of paint.  Some tell me I need to do this every year, but I'm going to examine first and then decide.  Next time I do it, I'm using a top-grade epoxy undercoat (some very good one-parts out there).  I don't have a clue how well waxing holds up on the bottom.  Enjoy!
