Help With Windex on Compac 16/2

Hello everybody, I recently picked up a late 80's model Compac 16/2 and am loving it. I took it out for a couple of shakedown cruises to figure out if there were any issues I needed to address. Although it isn't a necessity, one thing that I would really like is a mast-mounted Windex. It looks like a previous owner had one as there is a bracket riveted to the top of the mast. I live out in the boonies and the closest boat equipment store is two hours away--I made the trip but couldn't find a windex that would fit in my bracket.

Can anyone identify the type of windex I need based on this photo? The top has a round hole and the bottom has a small rectangular hole. I would really like to find what fits this thing rather than drill out rivets and/or make more holes in my mast.

Thanks,
Brian

Welcome to the forum and glad you're loving the boat. No idea here.  That mount is a mystery to me. The Davis attachment is definitely different, well at least the newer ones are.

I did a quick search and came up with squat.

Find a piece of scrap teak wood.
Couple of tec screws as shown on the top-o-mast of my CP-19.
That nodule under the windex, was a piece of balsa wood, super glued on, that held two bamboo spears out on a 60 deg angle, both sides of the centerline.
Because my dock puts my mast into tree branches, I broke off these bamboo indicators. But the windex works fine.
By the way I found this windex among scrap skids at the harbor I was walking my dog in.

I did look at a Windex 10 but the one I saw had a completely different mounting set-up. Maybe there are different versions? I posted a similar request for help on SailNet and someone suggested I look at this one: http://www.mauriprosailing.com/product/WIC7202.html

You can install one of the other versions if it has the same shaft diameter by using metal file to make the two small flat spots on the shaft end.  The flat spots are only 1/4" to 3/8" up the shaft, so it doesn't take much time to file them on the soft aluminum shaft.

Thanks for the advice--I will take a look at it when I am off work tommorow.

Capt Greene is right. After you file the end flat on either side at the bottom, insert the Windex and seat the end of the shaft through the rectangular hole in the spring steel holder mounted already on the mast. The squared edges through the little rectangular hole prevent the shaft from turning  Adjust the holding power of the spring steel  by hand until the Windex is held securely . It is like adjusting the plug in a sink when a lever is used to plug or unplug the drain.
