Newbie Question on CP16 Deck/Line Organization

Hi,

I'll be starting my second season with my CP16 soon. Since I have a hanked on jib I plan on adding a downhaul to so I won't have to go forward to drop the sail.

My boat only has the two factory horn cleats port and starboard on the coach roof. Since they are already dedicated to main and jib halyards I'm curious about what others do with other control lines as they add them. Install additional cleats (horn, cam, etc.)? Install ganged rope clutches?

If anyone has any pictures of how they've organized their lines it would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance.

BTW The current issue of Small Craft Advisor has an article about cruising in a CP16. Made me want better weather ASAP.

Tim,

I have cleats on the mast for the halyards.  I find it's easier and I get better tension by standing in the companionway to secure the cleats.  For the furler line, I have a spinlock powercleat mounted on the roof.  I like the powercleat, it's sort-of like a rope clutch, but about the price of a cam cleat.   You pull to lock, and lift to release.  Might do the trick for you.

Not my boat (obviously) but shows you how it's connected.

Thanks for the response Kevin.

I think I'll install a couple cleats on my mast for the halyards. Right now there are none.

Anyone installed horn cleats on the mast? I assume it is as easy as drilling and tapping two holes for each cleat. I'd probably go with 4-5 inch nylon cleats.

I take the loose ends of my halyards and throw them down through the companionway and into the cabin. That way they are out of the way, and if I need to drop the sails quickly, I don't have to worry about uncoiling them.

I have cam cleats a previous owner drilled through the cabin. You can see the main halyard (white w/ blue spec) coming around the starboard side of the companion way. One problem I have is that the halyard chafes on the rim of the sliding hatch b/w the base of the mast (I have a block riveted to the mast) and the cam cleat. I bought some cheek blocks I plan to install as organizers to reroute the lines around the hatch. I just don't have the courage to drill the hole in my deck of my boat.
