Green sides of boat beyond saving gel coat burnt out. Any suggestions about how to or recommendation of qualified boat yard in Southern New jersey would be appreciated.

Tom:
where in southern NJ are you? A few issues ago, "Good Old Boat" magazine had a good article on applying Awlgrip using tip and roll method and the results were fine. A friend of mine Awlgripped his 1970 Morgan 30 and it came out awesome...did it himself in the boatyard.
I'm in southern Ocean County and sail Barnegat Bay.

Hi Tom,
I've seen many boats that were gel-coated green at the factory, and in almost all cases, they became dull, oxidized, and essentially had the color "bleached" out of them by the sun. No amount of polishing, wet sanding, or voodoo was able to bring back the original even color and luster to the gel coat, that rarely, if ever, is more than 15-22 mils thick. The top shelf job would be a sprayed-on Awlgrip finish, which Ocean Gate Marina or Winter's in NJ could do for you, though "top job" does equate to top price. I've seen their work and it is indeed excellent. You could do a very acceptable roll and tip job using a two part paint. There is a fellow at my old marina who has done many boats in this fashion for himself and friends, and might be convinced, for a reasonable price, to do your Horizon Cat. I had a
Pacific Seacraft Orion that was rolled and tipped with dark green automotive acrylic enamel with hardener and brightener added, and the finish stood up for some fifteen years of Bahamian, Floridian, Chesapeakian, and Northeasternian sunshine and always looked good with a Springtime waxing......very durable finish that is still holding up out in the Pacific. Your Horizon is small and trailerable enough that you could convince a good body shop to spray it for you- just make sure you get the acrylic enamel- not the newer base/clearcoat finish. Was that your Horizon on stands over at Mariner's in Barnegat? Good luck with the repaint!!

That was my boat in Mariner's marina. She is named the Figero after a family pet we had for a long time. I have heard of the two marina's mentioned and know they do good work. Will be taking a few months to make up my mind. I sail on beautiful Manahawkin Bay were I live.
