You'll have a light but still won't be Coast Guard approved, nor will it be visable for the two mile requirement. No big deal. Bare in mind that if on a private can off shore in non-salt water, sitting on anchor or can beyond 200 foot off shore you'll need an approved light.

Otherwise as my neighbor Bud Evenson found out, the  [STUPID AND AGRVATING] DNR will ticket you $180 for not capitulating to there will. You know the DNR can enter your house and search for that offensive fish side in your wife's freezer without a warrent? They have more power then the State Police in Wisconsin and totally unnecessary!

I was looking for a similar light recently.  Happened to be in a Sears store - found an interesting light that might suit your needs.  It's not an LED but more of a lantern.  I was hurried and didn't buy it - but take a look at a reasonably well stocked Sears store.  They might have an alternative.......Donzen

I purchased one of these recently...very happy with it!  Nice lighting, seems very well made.  A very convenient anchor light solution.  I actually got the one that has some warm lighting that points downward for cockpit lighting as well:

I made a cover with some velcro so you can cover the cockpit lighting if you'd rather just have the anchor light. 

I'd like to replace my cabin  lights with their LEDs at some point.

Harbor freight sell a solar rechargeable LED lantern. I bought two of them. They recharge off solar, 12V, and 110V. Real cheap too!

I have one and I use to light up my cockpit. I also have an approved Anchor light at the top of my
mast. The issue I find with the anchor light at the top of the mast is that I usually am not looking 40 - 50 feet
above the horizon to see a white light. By having it near the water, the average boater will see it.

This light comes with 2 bulbs... one for 2 nmi coverage and a lesser wattage for general lighting.

I am very pleased.

It is a marine light and is CG approved for 2 nmi.(uses.32 amps)  There is a second bulb which is 1/3 the amperage at .110 A.
It will fit in a 2x2x4" area also so it packs nicely for storage... had one for 6 years now without issue.
