CP16 Sheets led aft??

Hi,

I've been sailing my CP16 on Lake Michigan for the past 6 years and figure it's time for some upgrades - (til I find a 19 or 23 for sale nearby ;)

Mine's a 1982 and I'd like to run the sheets aft - has anyone done this? pictures?  I'd like to keep what little deck there is uncluttered and was thinking two blocks at the base of the mast that could run the lines at about a 45 deg angle towards the back then another set either side of the hatch rails with cleats mounted vertically on either side of the hatch.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim.

From your description, I'd gather you meant the halyards.  ;)  Just remember when you drill into the deck, even though it's not cored (for the most part), it's a good idea to seal the holes.  My preference is epoxy.  Backing plates won't hurt, either.

My mast has a sheave close to the base of the mast with a cleat above it.  Usually, I'll tie off to that cleat.  But, when I want to lead the halyards aft, I simply tie them to the larger bronze cleat on deck.  True, it becomes a tripping hazard, but I'm just that much more careful.

The way you describe it sounds like the best way to keep things uncluttered.  Let us know how it goes.

I've mounted two swivelling sheeves/cam cleats near the bottom of the mast similar to the way the legacy is set up.  I'll get some pics and post later this week.

Jim,
No help on running lines aft....however we have a CP 16 also and live very close to Lake Michigan on the Wisconsin side down by Racine and Kenosha.  Where are you located?  Would love to hear more about sailing on Lake Michigan.
So far only brave enough for all the inland lakes we have around here.  Which are quite a few.

Welcome to this great forum and we hope to hear more from you.

Carol and Paul  -- sorry I meant halyards :)   Thanks for the info and pictures would help.  I wouldnt mind having the lines cleated in the cockpit but I'm thinking I need to clean them up to minimize risk of tripping. My dog likes to lay on top of the sliding hatch (with a vest of course) and me with size 14 feet can easily find any loose rope and would likely end up taking a dip.

Doug and Linda,

My boat's at Montrose Harbor in Chicago though I'm considering moving it to Winthrop if Mayor Daley continues to kill us with the Chicago rates.

I'm very comfortable with the CP16 on Lake Michigan. As you know it's a very stable boat for its size and the swells on the lake have posed no problem for me. I typically sail towards downtown or up to Evanston and only go about 4-5 miles offshore (simply due to the temperatures).  I would not take it across the lake however as I do not have the ability to reef the main.

I have taken it up to Door County a few times (again in the Lake) and overnighted it on Washington Island.... I'm a cheesehead at heart :)    Where do you sail?  I have a buddy trying to get me to bring it to Lake Geneva for a weekend.

Jim,

I am a bit of a chicken when it comes to sailing in Lake Michigan, that's why I asked.  We usually sail the other inland lakes around South Eastern Wisconsin.

If your friend talks you into sail Geneva Lake, let me know when.... we will surely try and join you.  It is about 20 - 30 minutes away.

We and several others are putting on/together a COM-PAC MidWestern Rendezvous at Carlyle Lake in Illinois on August 8.9. and 10th...it would be great if you came.  Fun, prizes, Fun, and more Fun.

Would love to hear more about sail on L. Michigan...if I were to go it would be Racine, Wi

Email me.
Thanks, and hope to see you at Carlyle lake.

Hello,

I also have a 82 Compac-16 and decided to run my lines aft a few years ago.  I did exactly what you mentioned.  I purchased 3 Ronstan Swivel 180 blocks and mounted two of them ( jib and main halyards) on opposite sides of the mast about 7 inches from the bottom.  I mounted the third on the aft side of the mast using longer screws through the track about 5 inches from the bottom for the downhaul.  The part number for the blocks is Model 545046 at West Marine.
I used my same halyards and added hard plastic stopper balls on the ends of each line.  This system works so well and is especially good for single handing as you can pull back on the boom with your left hand while pulling the halyard at the same time and the halyard stays constantly cleated as you raise the main sail.

Good luck,

John J
