Where to install a stern light? Need help!

Hi all,

I bought a CP 16 two years ago. It seemed to have a stern light mounted through the stern deck. It is a tiny bulb and needed a cover. In lieu of fixing it I ordered a stern light from Com-Pac. What I received looked like nothing I have. The new light is a 180 degree fixture with a flat back.  The only possible mounting location I can think of is on the transom, but it would then be blocked by the rudder and or the outboard on its spring mount transom. Does anyone have s picture of one of these installed? A verbal explanation would be ok, too.

m   Hi John, my stern light is mounted on the transom on the starboard side upper corner. The light was there when I got the boat. hope this helps.   HAPPY SAILING   BILL

Thanks Bill. Unfortunately, the picture is too small and doesn't show a reference feature. Would you be able to email a copy of the picture (or pictures) to me?

I had the original "square edge" blocky light and it would catch the sheet line and was generally sharp and in the way... I replaced it with this nice round job from West...
here is a pic although not close up of the new one...

and here's the old one:

Thanks, Dale. That looks like just about where the old light was/is - though perhaps a bit more to the outside of the transom deck (wrong term? Poop deck?).

Question: Did you get the jib tracks and blocks from Com Pac or from someone else? Where do you clete them?

I have another stern light suggestion.  I was concerned about lines getting tangled in the stern light when I added one to my CP16 last season.  I found a nice aternative that has worked so far.  I installed a removable telescoping LED light pole.  It drains a fraction of the juice, is completely out of the way when removed, and doesn't have bulb to burn out.   I mounted it on the starboard side of the transom.  It sticks out at a slight angle out beyond the stern when in use.  It telescopes from 2-6', so you pretty much have to purposely work to get any sheets tangled in it.  (The boom doesn't come  close to hitting it either.)  I highly recommend it to anyone.  I found it at Boater's World (catalog online) for $70, but you can probably find it elsewhere.

My jib tracks came stock from the factory.. which would be my recommendation for a source if you are considering it.... they match the shape of the coaming.

My sternlight replacement was from West Marine and luckily, the holes matched.  I haven't had any problems with it snagging the main sheet like the old one did.

Best Regards

A few years back I posted about adding a stern rail. The stern light had to come off the hull and up onto the stern rail. All went well, the resulting hole in the hull was used and covered up with a flag staff, while the wiring went up inside the stern rail tube and out at the point where the newly relocated stern light went.
BTW the lamp is designed for 120 deg viewing, not 180 deg. And at night I roll up my flag and lash it to the flag staff so as to not cover the lamp. skip.
