i have constructed  a pvc jib furler on my 16. i used heavy plastic wire ties to affix the sail to the pvc pipe. im wondering if anyone has used a different method.

Commercially available rollerfurling by CDI.  Bullet proof! Bolt rope sail attachment with halyard.  Changing Headsails? no trouble.  Sometimes it's easer not to reinvent the wheel.

I remembered the company initials incorrectly, its :  CDI    cruising Design Incorporated

Rick,

After two seasons with my boat, I think a roller furling/reefing headsail would be great.  My CP 16 is one of the earlier boats made, #249, and I don't have a bowsprit.  I'm just beginning to look into the specifics and have two main questions:

1.  Is your HCI designed for reefing the headsail as well as furling?  I ask because I was at a local sailing shop this summer and they pointed out that I could purchase a heavier dingy roller furler as opposed to a roller-reefing for $150.  Apparently, a roller furling headsail is good for for full headsail or completely furled only.  It isn't designed for the loads of a partially reefed headsail and can fail.

2.  Do you have any recommendations of where to go to order a roller furler and genoa sized headsail?  I know that I'll have to call somewhere to get it shipped and am not sure I'll order the correct stuff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jeff

1. Yes:from CDI
SAILING WITH YOUR FURLER
Luff Tension. The jib requires only enough tension to removethe wrinkles along the luff of the sail. This tension will be quitelow (perhaps 50 pounds) because modern sails are quite stiff, requiring little stretching, and because the luff tape will prevent scalloping often encountered with hank-on sails. This allows the sail to be set up for the entire season without need for adjustment before and after each use. Foam Tape / Shape Tape. Because modern sails are quitestiff, the draft can be controlled with small changes in luff tension. If you are sailing to windward frequently in heavy weather and reef a lot, it may be appropriate to have a foam shape tape installed on the luff which will help remove the belly in a reefedsail. We suggest you consult yoursailmaker.

Furling & Reefing. When sailing reefed, you must move the jib leads forward to maintain the proper sheet angle. Failure to do so will lead to poor sail shape and could also cause the furler to rise off the bearing.

2. No.  Any sail loft should be able to get you the parts.  Capt. Gill Weiss owned my boat when this modification was compleated.

Roland,
I agree with the PVC furler.  I made one for my Newport Holiday 19.5 and it worked great.  Plans from Small Craft Advisor, back issue.  I improved the roller drum.  Worked great.  Now that I own a CP16, I have not as yet made one for it.  Unlike some people, a $15 - $20 furler that works great sure beats spending
hundreds of dollars on one.  I think I still have some pics of the PVC one I made if anyone is interested. email me.
