Cold sail day

Well I finally got my Eclipse back in the water after working on my trailer, rudder, shroud spreader, and teak for a few weeks.

Sunday was  sunny and warm (75 degrees) when we left home at 1030 am. When we arrived at Ventura  it was 62 degrees, heavy marine layer, with 10 mph winds.

After rigging we splashed the boat and motored out of the marina to the open waters of the Pacific.

With the main already up we killed the motor and unfurled the head sail and proceed northerly up the cost.

No white caps, no swells just a steady breeze of about 10 to 12 mph kept us moving.

Not too many other boats out but a few sail boats on the horizon. one seal about 30 yards off took a look at us.

There have been several whales seen over the last several weeks but none for us to see this day.

After an hour and a half we turned back towards the marina and with the winds to our back we were a little bit warmer .

As we enter the Chanel to the marina a passing sail boat skipper stated "pretty boat" and waved as he passed by us.

Comming in to the docks we were under the main only and just gliding along nicely and very slowly when I made my turn into the wind to dock. my crew jumped  off and tied us up. end of a nice sail day. now 58 degrees.

Once the boat was derigged  and ready to tow we went to Andrea's , our favorite fish and chips for hot coffee, fish and chips with a bowl of clam chowder  to prepare  us for our hour trip home mmmm good.

Any one else get out ?

Glenn, sounds like a perfect, albeit chilly, sailing day.  The coffee, chips & chowder sounds like the perfect way to end the day.  Unfortunately, it was haul out for the winter day for me yesterday.  But posts from those of you in "winter sailing friendly" climates will help those of us in harsh climates get our sailing fixes through the winter.

I finally got out on saturday on beautiful lake harris in central florida. The winds were out of the north at 10 to 14, and the temp in high 70's. It was a perfect day on the lake.   HAPPY SAILING     BILL

Last Tue I Sailed into Flanders bay from the Great Peconic bay. It was chilly but sunny. Winds very variable.  Learning more and more about "Steppin' up" everytime I sail her.

My Wife wants me to rename her (the boat not the Wife).  I need to ask Gil if he knows anything about her (the boat again) name before I decide on this risky choice.  She (Wife) wants me to name her (the boat) Arghhhh! I guess it's due her (the boat) salty look and the fact my son thinks of her (the boat) as a pirate ship. Confusing eh!*

Winter Sailing here in NY has it's pleasures.  The cold isn't one of them.  Shiver me timbers boys! Arghhh!

Glen:

Nice review of the day's sail.  Positive reinforcement after a good sail is always important. ;)  Sounds like a great time!!

Rick:

Have you sailed while it's snowing?  Here to tell you sailing during a light snow is quite the new adventure.  Any takers?  :D

Yup! it's that time of year for us too... went out Saturday to North winds 10-12mph straight off of the North Shore of Lake Ponchartrain.  Temps in the low 70s and we just couldn't stop broad reaching across the lake back and forth... 'till the calm of sunset and then headed in... just about the same experience as last weekend... Plan to go Wednesday... another front is blowing through.  I just LOVE the Fall here... it means "we've made it through another summer.
Best Regards

Snow sailing ?

last year and perhaps every 10 or 20 years an exclusive community on the cost of Calif. called Malibu had snow in January, there is a possibility slight as it may be that I could experience a snow sail.

No snow sailing for me here in NJ. Boat is out. However, when there is snow, there are miles of trails in the Pine Barrens for cross country skiing.
