Are you sure they were mud daubers stinging you?  I have never heard nor seen that they sting.
Now paper-nest wasps; yes, those are vicious!

Anyway, when servicing outboards, a good coat of Armor All all over the engine seems to keep the mud daubers off.  But it's not something to spray the whole boat with, so the Irish Spring sounds promising.

They can, but they usually don't, they are not aggressive and if they do their venom is much milder that other types of stinging wasps.  I've never been stung by one.

Hi, moonlight ~

I thought that they were mud daubers that stung me as their nests were built from mud -- but, I don't know for sure. All that I know is that as soon as I sat down in the cabin of my boat, seconds afterwards, I was getting stung all over by several flying insects that had the ability to sting. :-) It was awful!

All the best,
~ Chelle

Last time I replaced my companion way boards I added bear's ears.  I noticed they, the wasps, would get in around the rail the hatch cover slides on.  The ears seem to confuse them.  I still get the wasps on the gas compartment cover  are rarely under the mainsail. M

Bears Ears?

They take up the space between the hatch cover rail and block the entrance.  I haven't had a mud dauber nest or wasps in the cabin for years.  The wasps of the stinging kind like my gas tank cover and occasionally the cock pit hatch covers.  see attached
