New storm jib for my Legacy

Hi, friends!

I am so excited! I've received my brand-new storm jib for my Legacy! In case anyone might be interested to learn where I had my sail made, I contacted Sailcrafters Loft & Rigging: https://www.sailcrafters.com/. The gentleman with whom I spoke and who helped me was the owner, Tim Carlson. I also purchased new jib sheets for my storm jib through Sailcrafters as well. Tim was very helpful and walked me through the process.

Before I had found Sailcrafters, I had tried to reach out to some other sail lofts across the U.S., but was essentially ignored, put off — no return calls, etc. It was a disappointing experience, but I was determined to get a storm jib made, so I kept hunting for a loft that would help me.

Turns out that Sailcrafters is fairly close to where I live, so it was a win-win and I couldn't be happier — or excited to get out there next season to use my new sail! If you're a Legacy owner and are looking to add a storm jib to your sail plan, I'd highly recommend Sailcrafters. I'm next sending them my mainsail to have a second set of reef points put in. Next season, I'll be ready for those gusty bucking bronco wind and waves out on the lake!

Fair winds,

Chelle:

A second set of reef points in your main is a great idea. When I had Eggers Sailmakers (NJ) make a new suit of sails for my 23, I had 2 sets of points sewn in. I was once out in 30+ knots of wind, put in the second reef and reduced the headsail to about half (I have a CDI roller furler) and I felt safe and had a fun, fast sail. Of course the 1350 pounds of ballast on the 23's didn't hurt either!

I do not have a storm jib, but the sails are pretty heavy (6.2 ounce I think) and I had a luff pad sewn into the jib when they were being made. It helped that the sail maker was familiar with the local conditions around here, southern coastal NJ, Barnegat Bay.

  Cheers!

Hi, Bob23!

The sails on your 23 sound terrific!!! I am so excited to get those 2nd reef points put in and use the storm jib next season — there were several days, this past season, where I didn't feel I wanted to go out on the lake as the wind conditions exceeded my comfort level with what I sails I had. I think that having the 2nd set of reef points and the storm jib will really help me feel more confident to go out when it's a bit windier.

I would, one day, love to get a roller furler on my Legacy, but for now, having the lapper jib and the storm jib will offer me some flexibility. I'm also looking into getting a larger headsail, like a drifter, but that will take some reconfiguration with respect to the addition of appropriate hardware for the jib sheets to go. I plan to reach out to Sailcrafters to seek their guidance with that project, too.

All the best,
Chelle aka Seachelle
