Met another sailor yesterday

A gentleman stopped by the house yesterday to pick up an autographed copy of Joan's book.  When someone is coming over for the first time, we always tell them to look for the sailboat in the drive.   Arriving the man was quite excited to see the boat, and a long conversation ensued.  It was strange with the both of us wearing masks and talking across the yard, but after a couple minutes we knew we must get together when the world opens back up.  His name is Jim and he is an ASA instructor.  Jim has been sailing Lake Michigan for the past 40 years and active in sailboat timeshares.  His first boat was a Compac 16 he purchased new in 1979.  Last year he and his wife moved to our small lake and his sailing came to an end with the purchase of a pontoon boat he keeps at the marina two blocks from our place.  Jim was perplexed at how many sailboats are are sitting on private beaches and in backyards, yet he has never seen any canvas on the lake itself.  I explained I myself mainly sail the north end, and there is one other gentleman who sails every weekend.  Jim is retired and we promised ourselves to get together for a sail, or several, on both our 15' sailboat here at Lake Holiday, and larger lakes on our Compac 19.  I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can from Jim and his many years of sailing and instructing.
Maybe if I pay attention and learn something, I won't come in last at CLR, or leave the marina with a deck chair hanging from the bowsprit!

Hey, a man can dream can't he?

Hey, CC,

That wasn't a deck chair on your bowsprit, it was an crush frame designed to protect your bowsprit when you ram the competition during the race.

I'm sorry to hear that.  While I have never been able to work out attending the CLR, I've a always had hope that someday I might.  Certainly there are many draws to the event not the least of which is the entertaining exploits of Crazy Carl as have been reported in the post event reviews.  ;)

I think in order to have this gentleman sail with me more than once, I'll let him take the tiller as I watch and keep to myself.

We took the ASA course back in Feb - those guys really know sailing - I learned a lot even though I have sailed a fair amount over the years

Don't change a thing, Carl. You and Joannie are doing just fine! First time I met you I believe you were fussing with an outboard at CLR, correct? I was incognito...that sure didn't last!
Cheers,

EVERY time we're at CLR I'm fussing with an outboard!  It's my Carlyle Curse!

Last year I brought 3 outboards with me.

Knowing you from the site here, it was fun being incognito for a while...watching you and the outboard have it out. I wanted so suggest checking the air in the tires but thought that might blow my cover!
