Hi everyone. After lurking here since 2015 I finally did it! Made a deal on a 1987 16-2 today and hope to bring her home next week. She appears solid but sails are tired and she will need lots of elbow grease to find some shine. After joining this group I bought & sailed a Rhodes 22 but we sold her 2 years ago and have been land lubbers since then. It may be a long winter waiting for our first sail on our new, yet to be named CP. Thank You for all the great info on this site.

Congratulations on your new boat. New sails are the best. Too often I hear people go on about how their boat still has its original sails, like it's a point of honor. Prep as much as you can before the sailing season and you will be out there sailing before you know it.

Brought her home today! Trailered 40 miles behind my Subaru Forester with no issues. Already I have questions. Is the hull number the middle part of my vin? Looks like 2508. Does that sound right for an 87? Also sails are Johnson Sails. Are they good quality sails? I don't think they are original. How would I determine if they need replacement? They are stained in places but appear to be sound. Ah, the adventure begins.

P-sail,

Welcome, and congrats on the cp 16, and the Subaru.  Big fan of both.  The Johnson sails are most likely the originals.  These came with my 19.  I would recommend just checking for rips, thin spots, abrasion marks and loose thread.  If they look fine, I would use them.  Once you have them in use, you can judge if they are "blown out" by their shape and how you boat performs, especially into the wind.  By using these sails during you learning curve, you reduce the risk that you may injure the new sails.  Also, once you learn how your boat feels with the old sails, and you will really appreciate the new ones.

The hull number is explained under the registry heading on the home page.  A lot a scholarship is included here.

Safe sailing,
Brian

Paul,
Congrats on your new yacht. '87 is a very nice model with a little more cabin wood than some later 16s and the larger jib triangle for improved balance. 2508 is a good number for 1987s. I think the year started with# 2458??
If the hull number is not on the main, I'm thinking the sail is newer. Of course the sail could be newer but thirty years old. Johnson sails have been around a long time. I think the name is now Island Sailing.
Sounds like you are in cold country and probably can't sail for a few months. You can check the normal stuff on the sails, seam stitching slugs, wear areas, bolt rope, batten pockets , jib hanks etc. If you can hoist the main while on the trailer and set the downhaul and outhaul, you can see if the boom sags significantly, indicating a stretched leech. You can measure your sails and see how the main luff dimension compares to a new sail and get the LP of the jib/s to determine the size%.
If you have a sail loft nearby, they may give you a courtesy evaluation of your sails and give a fair idea of cloth weights of the main and jib.
If you have a place to wash and dry your sails before the sailing season you can get a better look at your cloth condition and fold/stow/bag your sails the way you want them.
The real test in my view is on the water. If you can trim the ji so the belly is 1/3 aft of the luff and the main belly is 1/2 aft of its luff, your sails are ok. Still , new sails are wonderful and the cost for sails on a 16II is not a second mortgage. If you go for new sails, there is a load of good info and views on this site.
Please register your boat on the Association list/spreadsheet.
That 16 is a lot bigger boat than it appears. Hope you enjoy many fine sailing days.

Hello Paul and welcome. It was a CP 16 that taught us sailing a buzzilion years ago. We returned to sailing after a 25 year hiatus a few years back and part of that return is another CP 16, also a 87' Mk2. We will never part with her and our grandson already refers to her as "our" boat. Enjoy.

P-sail,
welcome aboard.
Waiting out the seasons is sometimes difficult, but you can use the time to practice rigging your boat, so you look like an experienced pro when you get to the boat ramp, not to mention limiting hassles & having more time on the water.

Welcome aboard! I agree with Bramble on his suggestion about pre-ramp rigging practice. It always amazes me to see the drama at our local boat ramp!
Cheers!

Yahoo! Got her out for our first sail today. Color me impressed. This is a fine little boat. Got her launched, motored under the bridge and then rigged and sailing. No issues. The wind was fickle but when it showed up we seemed to scoot along nicely. An impressive first outing. Wouldn't you know UPS delivered my new sail while I was out sailing. Oh well, next time!
