So what is used to secure the main sail tack to the boom?  Mine currently has nothing so I used the reef hook just to be able to hoist the main.  I'm assuming a shackle; can anyone tell me what size?

Strange, the parts you are missing??  How does this happen.  Anyway, on the front of the boom there is a fitting with a hole in it.  It is a tang of sorts that sits on the top of the front of the boom.  A shackle goes through the tack and has the pin go through the hole.  Is your boom on right side up?  The sail is not loose footed so it needs the slot on the top of the boom.  This puts the fitting facing up.
