looking to buy Compac 16

I have been reading this forum for a long time and finally decided the Compac 16 is the boat for me.

I am looking at buying a Compac 16(1979).  I stopped short of making the deal so far due to concerns I have about the keel.  It has a few blisters with water in them.  A  small puddle of water lay on the concrete under the trailer where they had leaked out.  Overall the boat looked good and the keel is solid.

My sailing experience is next to none.  I sailed several years back with a friend on his boat and have thought about sailing ever since.  I have never been able to get it off my mind.  I guess I am hooked.

Any insight concerning what I have described would be appreciated.

Hi wantosail,

Bummer about finding a boat that has blisters, are you sure they were blisters or had the keel cracked? The keel on a compac 16 is fiberglass filled with concrete and if water gets down in the keel and freezes the keel can crack,  I have not seen blsiters do what you describe.  It sounds like that compac may need some serious attention or at least have someone really experienced take a look at it.  What part of the country are you in?  There always seems to be a couple of Compac 16s for sale either on this forum or other sources, you will more then likely be able to find a boat in better shape.  Good luck in your search.  If you are in or near MN my C-16 will be for sale as soon as I find a nice C-19 or a Montgomery 17.  --Chad

A 79 with a few blisters is no reason to give up the ship, I would look at the overall condition, and accesories to see if it is a good deal. If the boat needs work that is something to barter about with the price. Every com-pac needs a loving home!

Nice thing about the CP16 is you can do the work yourself. If the price is right you can come away with a good buy that maybe just needs a little work.

When I bought my 16(Floridaze), I hadn't a clue how to do fiberglass repairs but I bought the boat cheap enough and being it was thirty years old, figured what do I have to lose to do the repairs myself.

I fixed her up and got her back out on the water!

There is a lot of good info here and around the web to help you do any repair, something to think about. At the time for me it was better to buy a boat for 1000 and fix her up then buy newer for say 3000.

To me there is a great feeling in restoring something to its original condition, then useing it like it was made to do. My current project is a 1940 9n FORD tractor. Things back then were made to last, and are easy to repair. Parts are available, but a little pricey on somethings
