OBX130

Any of you familiar with the OBX130? I recently found out about it and am trying to work things out to give it a shot this summer. According to their Facebook page, it's going to take place in early August. Starts at Cedar Island and hits various spots along the Outer Banks.

Haven't heard of this one. I have the Florida 120 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/fl120/) on my radar once I get my boat seaworthy and am comfortable sailing her. Probably similar to the OBX130.

The Fla120 is more of a race where the OBX130 seems more of a cruise. Might be a good practice run for the Florida race.

That's the impression I got too.

This year, the organizer is setting up (an optional) floatilla where if you so choose, stay within shouting distance of the rest of the group, under sail, for the whole route. Fast boats will need to dump some wind, and the slow boat captains will have to use everything in their bag of tricks to keep up. Sounds pretty interesting to me!

Well, it would certainly be nice to not be the only CP-16 out there. I joined the group on FB yesterday. Sounds like there was some high adventure in 2017, but worked out well for all.

I don't do Facebook so it took a little work for me to track down the OBX 130 route.
A couple of friends & I did an annual sailing trip, usually on my C-23 (I do miss that boat).  One year, we did their route one better.
We set out from Matthews Point Marina, on Clubfoot Creek (across the Neuse River from Oriental).  The first day we sailed down the Neuse & anchored at Lower Broad Creek.  The next day we headed to Cedar Island & down Core Sound.  We anchored that night just off Sealevel.  The next morning we sailed to Cape Lookout.  We overnighted there, then sailed to Beaufort via Shackleford Banks.  We proceeded up the ditch (the ICW) to the Neuse & back to Matthews Point.   We circumnavigated South River, Cedar Island, & Beaufort.
If circumnavigation of the east coast is the Great Loop, I guess this would be Pretty Good Loop.  -)

I followed their posts during the trip. They encountered a few storms but seemed to have a blast. They posted some beautiful pics of the Core Banks and had some close encounters with the wild horses. Interesting fleet of boats to include a couple of Hobie Tandem Islands. I was in Swansboro at the time and it killed me not to be able to join the cruise this year. Shooting for next year for sure!

In response to the FL120 questions earlier in the thread...I participated in the Florida 120 the past two years.  This year with our Horizon Cat,  last year with a SageCat 15.  Not a race at all, more of a gathering with multiple options for sail destinations.  You can sail as much or as little of the 120 miles that you like.  Some boats myself included ventured for the longer 29 mile day sail, while others chose to sail local.  The event usually includes watching the Blue Angel's practice directly overhead one day.  Many in the group will meet at the same location this November 6 - 9th for the season ending Blue Angel's flight show and some fantastic Florida sailing in pristine gulf waters.  The events usually have anywhere from 15 to 30 boats, all makes, and also home built. There are usually one or two power boats lending support and making beer and ice runs....  All here are invited, PM me if you want details.
