I had a part of my starboard winch break on the last sail last year. Now the snows are gone I was looking at getting it fixed but I am not sure what brand it is when looking for parts and I didn't see it listed on the Hutchins website with other replacement parts. Does anyone know what they come with?

Name should be on the winch itself. Think my 19 has lewmar but again it's best to check yours before ordering parts. Downwindmarine.com has great prices for pawls/springs.

Probably a Lewmar 6. What broke? The most common failures are springs and pawls, which are readily available from Defender. Lewmar has used identical pawls in two sizes (small and large) across their product line for many years. The size 6 winch takes the small ones.

Thanks for the replies. That's the downside to my HOA is the boat is parked at the marina for the winter! If I remember I think that it is the upper crown? This is my first boat with a winch so I am a novice to maintenance and repairs of them. Hopefully it is something that I can replace the part and keep it going. If not maybe I will up grade.

After looking at your initial post on this site with your original photo of your 19, I will bet your winches are Maxwell winches. I don't think repair parts are available for these. However, there were some winches available in this post http://cpyoa.geekworkshosting.com/forum/index.php?topic=10667.msg80496#msg80496 .
The 23 and 19 share winch sizes generally.

Great thanks for the information!

Looks like I do have the maxwell 14s. It was the top of the drum that cracked and the port winch has a crack in it as well, probably just time before it fails as well. It seems that maxwell sold their tooling to another company, Hutton-arco. Has anyone used them for parts for winches?

Just FYI if anyone else needs maxwell winch parts they do have them sale and are very easy to work with. Hopefully everything will arrive quick and in one piece.
