Does anyone out there in Compac-land have any info regarding self steering vanes installed on a 23? I have a 1985 23/2 with tiller steering. I'm new to this site; looks like much fun.

Well, I'm replying to my own question, just in case anyone else is interested in self-steering. I bumped into Rich Hutchins at Strickly Sail in Philly; he advises an Autohelm and I sure trust his judgement but a device that requires no energy is quite appealing, eh?

You know, Autohelms are neat! And they don't take much power. Less than I thought if these things don't have to work too hard.

What happens when you fall asleep and the Autohelm drives the boat into something hard? Or gets in the way? Go down below for a sandwitch and presto a problem.

Might be better just to heave too, and park the boat at sea.

Just use your cotton picken head when using these things. skip.
