If it hadn't been for the Colonial Merchant Marine fleet, notably John Hancock's (the big signature on the DOI) ships, known as "Privateers", the Marines would've been known as "Landies".  The bravery and risks taken by the colonial ship owners and their crews made the an Marines effective weapon in The revolution.
