Pilot House Lillyanna on Lake Michigan

Hi Everyone,

Sure has been a while since I posted on the fine CPYOA forum and I hope you are all faring well.  The Lillyanna performed flawlessly on Lake Michigan in 2017, and completed many fishing trips, including a 4 day trip from Manitowoc to Algoma and back along the unforgiving  west shore of Lake Michigan.  The outriggers and down-riggers functioned perfectly and the pilot house is a big hit with the crew.  My fishing skills are great in spring when the Coho are running, but they were not good in mid-summer, when we tried to chase the dwindling number of King Salmon in Lake Michigan (the kings eat Smelt, and smelt population are plummeting due to zebra mussels and other critter and other factors, and the Kings are picky and only want smelt apparently).  The Compac 16 also worked great on our smaller inland lakes and she saw steady action in 2017.  I have a pretty set of tanbark sails for her that are cut ot go over the pilot house, and I need to get a sailing picture of her somehow this year.  Photo's below of the Lillyanna on Lake Michigan in 2017.  Happy New Year everyone!

Funny you mention the Scamp, Bob. 

Jason, I've been following your Scamp build and all I can say is NICE WORK SO FAR!!! I am interested in building one for a retirement trailer boat.  I admit that the build looks a bit daunting considering the time I have right now to build it (that is to say, not much time!).   With that being said, I am leaning towards just buying another Com-pac 16 to use to trailer around during retirement.  Or maybe a Picnic Cat, Legacy or even a Suncat....so many choices!!!!

Oh yeah, this thread is about the pilothouse! Looks really cool and functional. Especially for the Great Lakes where weather can turn quickly and few places to go hide.

One thing I wasn't sure about is if you installed the house in such as way as to be removeable?  It doesn't look permanent but it was hard to tell from the blog and pics for sure.

Please excuse my delayed response.   

Bob:   How does she row?....I'd say the pilot house added some weight but not enough to make the 16 noticeably more difficult to row.  She remains a boat that can be effectively maneuvered in port using oars, and effectively moved in still periods, with oars. 

I followed Howard Rice's adventure at the Horn. He prepared for it, and I'm glad he survived.  I never met him, but I'm glad he is pursuing his dreams. 

Salty: Thanks for the encouragement on the Scamp build.  I am at the finish line but not over it.  I was installing the rubrail over the weekend and the bedding-coated-mahogany-rail snapped creating a mess that I need to fix.  Persistence required!  She will be launched when the ice comes off here.  I have wanted to build a boat, and even though I am in my early 40s I still figure I'm not getting any younger, so I figured I should go for it.  With the minimal hours I put in every week, it will take me a bit over two years to complete. 

On the pilot house on my Compac 16.  I love it.  The pilot house is bedded down and bolted down....I bought a one-way ticket on the pilot house....it is not removeable. 

I will post some photos of my 16 pilothouse with me new tan bark sails this spring.
