Rigging the CP-16

I just bought a CP-16 and there were a few things that made me scratch my head when I was rigging her for the inaugural sail. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

The first thing that stuck me was the use of some elastic rope for the outhaul. It seems like a safe bet that this should be something else. I also do not have a block at the end of the boom for an outhaul. Is this missing or does the line run through that inside hole?

The second question is about the bow chain plates. Does anyone know what size pin I should have there to attach the forestay turnbuckle? It's a couple hour drive to anyone who would carry them so I can't just walk in and compare to what I have.

Three. Is there supposed to be a shackle of some kind on the inboard bow chainplate to attach the jib tack or should I continue clipping right to the plate per previous owner?

Finally: I just bought 1/4 sta-set to replace the 1/2 and 3/4 lines currently on her. Am I going to regret going so small? Searching through older Pays I see that many of you are running a bit larger diameter. The sale is still going on at aspltd so I would rather order there than pay twice the price at West Marine the next time I make it South.

Thanks for all your thoughts! I've ordered the trailer sailor book that comes so highly recommended here but it hasn't arrived yet so I appreciate this community where I can find some answers in the meantime.

Hi Dove,
Welcome to this wonderful site full of loads of insightful information.  On my 16, the outhaul is not elastic and does have a small block at the end of the boom. It also has another smaller block there for, I believe, the topping lift.
The clevis pin that I use to attach the forestay is a 3/8" width, length is either 1/2" or 19/32" depending on which side of the hole one is measuring to.

There is a shackle on my  16 on the inboard chainplate for the jib.

A couple of posts down from this one is a discussion of 1/4" vs. other sizes. Hutchins specs 1/4" lines, though some folks seem to like 5/16" and up for their lines. I decided to try something different than what is on my boat now and just ordered 1/4" sta-set  to replace my old ones. I look forward to seeing how they work.

The trailer sailor book is a great addendum to this site. Happy sails!

Thanks for the quick reply Chris!  This helps a lot.

Yes. a small block on the end of the boom.
I use 5/16 lines every where except...1/4" for jib sheets and heavier dock lines.
People might not agree but I use a quick release shackle below the turn buckle on my forestay.

One more quick rigging question.

I bought a replacement forestay, but I just realized that the forestay I bought is 1/8 and the specs call for 5/32.  Apparently the forestay I just replaced was not only spliced, but it was also the wrong size...

The replacement wire I just bought is spec'd at 2100 lbs breaking strength.  A quick skim on WM's website has ALPS brand 5/32 at a breaking strength of 2800.  700 lbs seems like a significant difference, but I am still holding out hope that maybe --
just maybe -- I can sail with what I just bought and it won't come crashing down on me.

You might be okay, but I wouldn't know. I would call the factory and ask their input on your situation.
