I didn't have much interest or attention to my rating here whether swabbie or deckhand. I was just happy to be aboard. (Although I've got to say a catboat sailor may wonder what he or she did wrong to be "promoted" to foredeck crew.)  After six years and 100 posts I've been promoted to the helm, albeit 2nd watch, but the helm! that's what I sail for, wind in the face, eye on the tell tales. Who knows with more posts, contributions and a certain amount of B.S. how far I might go. Watch out Bob23.

I'll accept your challenge Phil and raise you 2 glasses of PBR!

Worry not for Helmsman, then Captain promotions are next. At 500 post..Commodore!

Interested in being an admin? Fleet Admiral.  Tempting, eh?!?!?!

Commodore, yes I'm on my way!  But wait, one hundred posts in six years that would mean, at that rate, I would get those scrambled eggs on my hat in thirty years.  If I step it up I might do it twenty and work to get ahead of Bob on all those new membership fees. And, of course, in twenty years that PBR might not dribble down my chin quite so much.  Man, I've got to work faster than that. I think I'll take my keyboard in for a tune up.

Admiral? Sounds bit too much like responsibility.

Whoa there.Nelley!!! I see the makings of a Fleet Admiral  in good 'ol Philb.  By the way, what in blue blazes  kind of name is Philb?

Alright here folks, I am gunna have to step up and defend Bob23's rank here. Given how many posts and number of years he has been active, while still holding a job (at least so i hear!), it is quite amazing. I am retired so have tons of time to ramble on about all sorts of stuff! Hmm....Admirals have a better retirement/benefits  package I hear!

How I came by the name? My grandfather used to call me Phil boy.  Being a sailor with many ocean miles without a hat and a bilge always full of PBR he became a bit forgetful. You see, often he would start to call me Hey Philb....., stop light his pipe and then lose track and move on to something else.

I can give another but less plausible explanation. Six years ago when I was making out the form to join here I didn't realize I was assigning this as my handle and didn't pick something salty like Salty or Brackish or with foresight, Junkie19.

Wow, cool surprise! Whodathunkit. Thanks to the admiral involved.   My feelings would not be hurt if the philb part went away.

Phib junk, lets let it ride that way till others get used to it.  It was me.  You're welcome.

Thank you Tim! That sounds fine. When the time is right what about putting philb in the small print line below to also help avoid confusion?
