I agree with Ken J on the kayak style. I purchased Stohlquist jackets for the whole family last year and we've been very happy with them. A great all around design without the worry of a malfunction or need to carry two types of jackets.

I ended up purchasing two $54 inflatable jackets from West Marine during their sale.  The fit is excellent, hardly know they're on, and they easily convert between manual and automatic.  We also have kayak-style life vests that we use for kayaking and will take those along as well, comfortable on those cold days when I'd like another layer for warmth.  Thanks again for all of your thoughts on the subject :-)

HI Bob, I don't have personal experience with that exact jacket, but I have used that style of jacket for years and in my opinion it is the only way to go.  Because it is so comfortable you will more than likely wear it.

About a year ago I purchased the jacket similar to the West Marine talked about earlier. It has an inflator that can be changed from fully automatic to manual pull cord only. I sail inland bays, venture into the Gulf some and lakes so I don't have the built in harness. In the past when I sailed off shore or over night I did have an inflatable with a built in harness. For me those days are over.

Thanks, Tom. I may order one as the sale ends midnight tonight. Looks like it would work well for rowing, something I love to do.

I just purchased one from Dick's Sporting goods on clearance for 150. I happen to like it and the straps/securement of the vest seem about twice as heavy duty as any other the other ones they had for sale, including the ones from the same manufacturer. I haven't actually used it yet but its very comfortable

It is also an insight version so you can easily see that it is in proper working order ready to be used... It carriers commercial USCG approval
