Gents,

A job opportunity in Durham, NC has come up and I'm 'feeling the waters' right now on all potential angles of a move to the Raleigh-Durham area. QOL, cost of living compared to Florida, recreational opportunities, etc.

Does anyone on this forum live near there- or has anyone sailed near there? It looks like there are a couple man-made lakes near The Triangle, but it'd be nice to hear impressions of these waterways from folks who've been there.

Also, any other knowledge of the RDU area more generally would be great. I've heard it's a good place to be, but have never been (will fly there for interview in couple weeks) --- so any perspective re: quality of life/stuff to do/see, would be terrific.  I'm in that uncomfortable, 'moving-sucks' mode right now.

Any input would be great.
Best,
Mike G.

My oldest daughter went to college at NC state and then worked at a research center in the triangle area. She was up there five years and then she started to miss Florida. I flew up there and drove a moving truck back to Florida for her.

That area seems nice and a lot like Florida. The area is flat and I saw lots of waterways while flying in. I don't know about the sailing  , but there is water close by. I made a wrong turn when I left the area and found myself in some foothills. It was a pleasant change to see some hills after living in Fl. for many years.  I was only there for a few days, but the cost of living there seemed about the same as Florida. Like most cities, there are some nice sections and there are some not very desireable sections. Good Luck!

I spent a year in the Research Triangle area doing some consulting work and the biggest impression made on me was the fact that the year I spent there had four distinctive seasons, each lasting almost to the day three months long. Summer was hotter than South Florida, Winter was colder and more miserable than places I've been further north, and Spring and Fall were absolutely and breath taken-ly (is that a word?) beautiful.

Can't help on the sailing conditions, only sailing I've done in NC is off the east coast.

Jim.

Send me an email offline at "jeff_tsai@ncsu.edu"

Jordan Lake is the local lake that is best for sailing during spring and fall.  It has a very nice ramp where all sailors meet there.  Kerr Lake is 90 min. away and is a much larger lake border VA.

You are 2 hours from coastal sailing water whether to be Neuse River, Pamlico River or Atlantic Ocean.

Thanks for all of your good input, guys.
Won't know for a few weeks, but chances are favorable that we'll be leaving Florida for new adventures in NC.

Jeff, I will contact you offline at your email. Also going to check out the NCSail link y'all sent.

Will keep you posted as to sailing experiences when/if we relocate to the RDU area.
Best,
Mike
