Hello, I'm a new member since I was given a badly damaged '78 16' Com-Pac. A distant relative heard me talking of looking for a stable 16' sail boat with which I could revisit a beloved experience from my youth.  As a camp counsellor in my youth I taught sailing and did some restoring of old boats. Now at age 70 and living by the James River in Va. my passion for sailing has resurfaced with intent.   I am now in possession via this relative of just such a boat and I am totally psyched for the challenge.  It was hit by lightning as it sat moored in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. and then sat for years in a yard unattended.  It was delivered to me and I began with repair of the deck which Mother Nature had separated unceremoniously from the hull. It was a totally self-satisfying experience: raising deck from hull, cleaning, sanding, glueing, re-ribeting and re-securing the rubber liner.  I have  fiberglassed random cracks, sanded and painted deck & hull, and am in the process of replacing the wood portions e.g. cabin door, that had rotted.  It is missing a main shroud turnbuckle which I hope you may be able to direct me in finding a replacement. The forward deck over the cabin has a round 'opening' which I would like to know how it should be 'treated'.  I would really appreciate any printed material that will help me in setting the lines correctly. Sails, boom, mast, and rudder all seem to be in good condition.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Hi,

The Com-pac website has part lists for the boats.  It is a good resource.  The turnbuckles are standard, and probably available from West Marine or Defender on line catalogues.

I love your enthusiasm!

Hope this helps.

Gw, congrats on finding a great boat. I have owned two cp-16's an '81 and '83. To answer your questions, I would take your other good turnbuckle to a sailing rigger in your area to match up, or contact the factory in Clearwater, Fla they may still carry some spares. The round hole in the forward deck had a plastic bushing installed to which a plastic cowl vent was fitted. I don't remember if it
was 3 or 4" hole but a similar one on defender.com is called a Nico low profile cowl vent, check if it comes with the matching  mounting collar. To get an idea of the running line lengths for your boat look at the Specs and data sheet entry right above your thread when you look at the cp-16 part of this forum. I don't have a drawing but the rigging is quit simple , maybe post specific questions for the group to answer.

Gwking: If you're on the James River, you're not too far from me in Woodbridge, just about an hour and a half from Richmond, right up I-95.  I've got a later model '93 CP16-3 still under restoration, and there's a rather nice  earlier model ('80s?) Com-Pac 16 also nearby mast-up in the same boat lot at Leesylvania State Park, in case you need a reference.  Drop me a line anytime if you want to swing on by some weekend.  I am also happy to take detailed photos of this or that, if they might help.

GwKing,

If you are further up the James, come visit. I have a Mark II, only slightly different in that mine has a bowsprit with a smaller main and larger jib.  Also, it has different length stays with spreaders

Lynchburg is were she sits on a trailer. I sail Smith Mountain Lake and the Potomac River near Ragan Airport.

Your excitement is what the older CP 16's are all about; a great boat for us over-70-crowd to cherish and sail.  Great to take the kids and grand kids sailing and camp sailing.

Hey GwKing, congrats on the 16! So good to hear about a boat being brought back from purgatory. We just acquired a 16 as well and are already back in the groove with sailing one. Our first ever boat 30+ years ago was a 16.

You don't happen to have the hull number do you? We are always wondering what happened to our first 16. It's about the right age.
