Adding cam cleats

Hi y'all,

I recently purchased my Compac 16 and am looking at adding a Davis Tiller Tamer, as well as a bimini top at some point, and was wondering, what is the best way to add the hardware? I'll need to add two cam cleats to the stern, and I've heard horror stories about people who drilled through the deck and didn't seal the holes properly, causing all kinds of damage to the core of the deck. What is the correct way to do this so that the holes do not leak through and damage the core or allow water inside the boat?

Thanks

JTMeissner

While not exactly the same reason, I did put stern rails on my CP16 which require holes in the same general area (I think). Drilled straight through (no core material, pure fiberglass), countersunk, then used butyl tape.  No issues.

I plan to remove my two rearward facing cam cleats sitting on risers that were suppose to jam-up the head sail sheets.
Great plan but did not hold the sheets and these kept slipping and changing the sail's profile and usually collapsing the tell tails.

Anyone know how to 'pull' fotos from facebook and place them on CPYOA?

Ahoy !

As has been posted here before .... correct way - at least it makes total sense - to drill thru-holes when there is a wood core in the glass ... is to drill an over- sized hole, fill it with epoxy and then drill a smaller hole thru the epoxy to attach the cleat or whatever.  This method seals any possible water intrusion from the hole into the core, but obviously, you still need to provide s seal to keep water from getting into the boat interior.
