Today I was given a possibly working ST1000 Tiller Pilot. Not all the other parts are there.... so I have to get the tiller connection and such. I am going to hack the wiring and make my own plug in since I wont need the NEMA setup, nor the GPS option and will only rely on the unit itself.
I am wondering has anyone set up theirs on their 19 and has pictures of the setup?

I guess others also owning of a ST 1000 and ST 2000 if you have pictures of the setup would be nice. I can use those pictures to help adapt my thinking on my own installation. Not that I cant figure this out for myself, but I would like input from those that have them. I am going to test this one in the coming weeks so that I can order some parts so I can install it on the boat if it works.
Also if anyone knows where to buy parts to save me some time looking..... that would be really cool.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks Brack, I don't know why that didn't show up in my searches.

I am still wondering about any 19er's that have the system. I might play with the unit later today in the garage........

Previous owner had installed one on my 23 (pictured in the other thread), but I'll be installing one on my 16 this spring. West Marine carries the tiller brackets and extensions. You find the install directions online. Someone on another forum mentioned that the pin on the end that attaches to the combing fits a standard oar socket, so I was planning on using an oar socket and splicing on a regular 12volt accessory plug to power it (no NEMA or GPS planned).

Mac-
I have one on my 19.  It tends to wonder a little bit but I mostly use it for short periods.  It is super handy when I am single handing and the outboard is propelling and I am setting sails.  Once things settle down it goes back on standby.  I can send you a couple pictures but the boat is still under tarp for the LONG COLD winter.  Mine did not come with any hardware so I made all that stuff and you can do it yourself.  I found the commercial hardware expensive and not really rocket science.  I ran the electrical wire out of the lazarette hatch and when not in use I don't concern myself with the electrical connection rusting or leaking water back into the hull.  Keep it simple.

Thanks Bruce, I am with you on the simplicity as well, and plan to do similar.
What kind of connection to the tiller did you use? Is it a small ball socket there? or just a pin that you used?

Installed an ST1000 on my Horizon Cat.  Used cigarette lighter connections with the male part connected to the 2 power leads on the ST1000 (Sea Talk and other wires cut off) and the female connector mounted in the aft cockpit coaming (had ordered that option with the boat).  Works great!

If you can get a manual online or other wise it can help judge if the Raymarine is working.  Connected to a fused 12v source and set it should extend and retract as you hold it and rotate it left or right. The manual will give the correct distance from the rudder pivot point to the pilot's mounting point on the tiller.  That will let you know what hardware to get to install it level and square. I saved my Simrad TP10  from a previous boat and was able to order a pin and drop down bracket for the tiller end of my 16 but couldn't find find a socket for the the other end.  Took it down to the local hardware store and found a shouldered bronze bushing that was a perfect fit.  I fastened a piece of mahogany I had under the flat area aft of the coming and drilled though the deck and just part way through wood. A little of epoxy in the bottom of the hole and bushing makes a base for the pivot rod and keeps the water out.  If there was more room I may have set the socket in a piece of wood above the deck.

Mac,

When I get to my boat this weekend I will snap some pics for you on how my ST1000 is setup. Mine came with the boat but was non-functional. Took it apart and there are some little belts with teeth on them and the teeth were stripped in one small section. I searched the internet for a source for a new belt and, after getting one and returning it due to a wrong sizing, I got the new belt. Now, the thing works like a champion. I am really glad to have it, particularly when I am single-handing, or when I have a boatload of neophytes and need to tend to the boat on my own.

Mine is wired for a GPS, but it would take a weekend of swearing until I figured out how to set it up.

I did end up installing an ST1000 on my 16 last year. I was trying to do it low buck, so the tiller pilot isn't as level as the manual says it should be, but it operates on the water just fine. I did use a marine grade 12volt plug/outlet for power, used a block of ipe wood and an oar socket for the boat side mount. Raymarine sells some mounts of various heights that could have gotten the pilot mounted level, but I wasn't willing to pay the asking price.
