Greetings from Indiana!

My name is Craig Maven and I live in northeast Indiana.  My interest in sailing began shortly before we moved from southeast PA.  My parents bought a cabin on Lake Wallenpauack in the Pocono Mountains and I borrowed one of their neighbors Sunfish.  I was hooked!

My father bought a Cape Dory 14 but found it was too wet and too tender for his tastes.  He bought a Mercury 15 and parked the CD 14 next to his garage.  I asked him what he was going to do with it (it needed a fair amount of work) and his response was, "If you get it out of my yard you can have it."  So, I hauled it off to Indiana, refinished it inside and out and sailed it for a two seasons.  It was wet and tender and with two young daughters I figured a boat that was a bit more stable and could accomodate a port-a-pot would be welcomed.  So I sold the CD 14 and started looking.

I found a 1980 Com-Pac 16 for sail in the Fort Wayne newspaper and made an offer.  The older gentleman who owned it had bought the boat so he and his son with cerebral palsy could do something together.  His son was no longer capable of getting on the boat so after it sat for a few years he put it up for sale.  He took my offer and with no lights working on the trailer I pulled it the 40 miles home.  That was over 6 years ago (the lights now work).  I have added an electrical system and would like to upgrade it to a 16/2-3 rig and interior.  We'll see.

I sail mostly on Grand Lake in western Ohio, but have also sailed some on Monroe Lake near Bloomington, have sailed on Wallenpaupack, and hope to get on the big lake (Michigan) next season.

Hey Craig:

You should bring your boat down to Geist sometime when we can sail together.  We (my wife Pat and I and my partners John and Marty Nagle) have "Party Girl", a CP 23/III on Geist.  There is also a CP 19/III in the slip across from us.  They are Greg and Mary Ann Christmas.  They have not as yet named their (new to them) yacht.

I am Secretary of the Indianapolis Sailing Club and have been there 14 years.  I race an INTERLAKE sloop and have a few other boats at the club as well.  (my wife says SELL SOME!)  The largest concentration of INTERLAKE sailors is in Ohio.

Current problem:  need to replace (for the second time) the water pump impeller on our Honda 9.9 four stroker.  Funny how we don't seem to have nearly as many problems with our SAIL boats as we do with our MOTOR boats.  HA!  I purchased all the shop repair manuals for our engine and found it to be worth every cent, er...dollar.

Anybody else in or near Indiana want to get together for a weekend gathering of the "Pac rats" ?  I think I can talk the Commodore into letting us use the main dock for a day or two.  I guess that question shoul really be posted on the main forum page.  What do y'all think?  (We don't really talk that way in Indiana).

Bob,

Sounds like a great idea.  Check you personal messages.  I sent you one with some dates I have open this fall.  Cross Sept 11 off that list.
