Carburetor on old Johnson

The float on my old Johnson 2 hp is sticking and needs to be replaced.  It has been consuming fuel at a greater and greater level and smoking more.  My old Lawn Boy was doing the same thing and a new float and adjustment restored the old zip and power.  Today I had fuel pouring out of the choke, so I know the float don't float too good.

Questions:  Can you buy a carburetor tune up kit for these old Johnsons?  Am I stuck going to the local dealer and paying through the nose?  Were these carburetors used on some lawn mower or weed whacker?

I'm going to post this on the Yahoo site, too.

Hi Craig,

I don't know how "old" your Johnson motor is but I did a quick search on Google for "old Johnson Outboard parts" and lots of sites came up. You might want to surf the net a bit . . . Ebay was mentioned several times.

Also, have you considered taking the carb apart and cleaning the float and its hinge point? I have seen this mentioned as a maintenance item in several motor manuals.

Gil,

I bought the carb tune-up kit from the dealer (only $14) and replaced the gaskets, the float and the needle valve.  Runs like a champ.  I noticed I had a little fuel leakage today. Looks like it is coming from the lower adjustment valve.  I'll have to tighten that up a bit.
